Is the 2017 Volvo S90 a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Volvo S90 earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its luxurious features, distinct style, smooth handling, and comfort, and they also describe it as a great value in its class. That lines up with the S90’s role as Volvo’s flagship sedan, where design and refinement are a big part of the appeal. If you want a stylish midsize luxury sedan that feels more distinctive than the usual choices, this one fits that brief well. The market also shows 36.2% good or great deals, which suggests there are still attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2017 Volvo S90 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with praise for its comfort, smooth handling, and overall value. The expert notes also frame it as a safe, family-friendly sedan that inspires confidence, even if it is not the most dynamic choice in the class. Volvo’s safety-first reputation and the car’s long-term crash-notification service add to that sense of reassurance.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about basic satisfaction and more about making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and still feels tight, quiet, and free of wear-related issues.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volvo S90?

At 69.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision or has higher mileage. Pay close attention to bodywork quality, alignment, interior wear, and whether the car still feels as refined on the road as it should. Because this sedan’s appeal depends heavily on comfort and presentation, condition matters a lot.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S90 is presented as a richly trimmed sedan with a beautifully finished cabin, and the test car’s optional equipment shows how much the higher-spec version can add. If you want the best value, focus on the trim that gives you the core luxury feel without piling on every option.
• Powertrain: The S90 uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with both turbocharging and supercharging, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. It is quick, and the expert notes that it can hustle harder than you might expect, while also returning respectable fuel economy.
• Safety package: Every S90 comes standard with Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system, and Volvo also includes free emergency crash-notification service for 10 years. The expert notes, however, that Pilot Assist was not consistently dependable in real-world testing.
• Infotainment: The Sensus system uses a vertically oriented touchscreen that is easy to understand when parked but can be distracting on the move. The car also includes digital instrumentation with four display themes and an available 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert recorded 22.3 mpg on a test loop and 24.2 mpg over a full week of driving, with an official estimate of 25 mpg mentioned in the test notes.

Which 2017 Volvo S90 trim should I buy?

The 2017 Volvo S90 is offered in 1 trim level: S90 T6.

Here's the short version:

The S90 T6: This is the trim described in the test-drive data, and it delivers the core S90 experience: strong power from the turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter engine, standard all-wheel drive, and the upscale cabin that defines the car. If you want the S90’s style, comfort, and flagship feel without overthinking the lineup, this is the trim to target. The safety package note is important here: Pilot Assist is standard, but the expert found it inconsistent in use.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volvo S90?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 36.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 152 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.78% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 69.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $15,616, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Volvo S90's resale value?

The current average of $15,616 sits slightly below last year's $16,400.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper what you recover later as a seller. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you can reduce the impact of that depreciation. The S90’s distinctive styling and strong owner satisfaction should help it remain appealing to shoppers who want something different from the usual luxury-sedan choices.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Volvo S90 safe?

The 2017 Volvo S90 receives the highest possible ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, with the exception of headlight performance, which is deemed Marginal.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every S90 comes standard with Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system, and Volvo also includes free emergency crash-notification service for 10 years. The expert notes that Pilot Assist did not consistently assist the driver in testing, so you should treat it as a convenience feature rather than something you can rely on fully. The Marginal headlight result is the main caveat to keep in mind if you do a lot of night driving.

Should I buy a 2017 Volvo S90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 36.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 69.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.78% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 stands out for its bold design, flagship positioning, and strong safety reputation.

The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive version of the S90’s design, comfort, and safety-first appeal, the 2017 is a strong pick. If your priority is simply finding the best-priced example, you should compare listings carefully and focus on condition, accident history, and equipment level rather than chasing the newest badge alone.
