Used 2017 Volkswagen Passat for Sale nearWilmington, NC

How much does the 2017 Volkswagen Passat cost?

Prices have softened 4.63% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 808 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.9/5 user rating and a 7.3/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, fuel efficiency, spacious interior, and overall value, and they also point to an enjoyable driving experience. For you, that means the Passat fits especially well if you want a roomy midsize sedan that emphasizes everyday usefulness over flash. The market also shows 33.3% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback also highlights reliability, low maintenance costs, and a trouble-free ownership experience, while the expert notes emphasize predictable power delivery and a car that lives up to its advertised performance. That combination suggests the Passat should be a sensible long-term choice if you prioritize steady, low-drama ownership.

For used buyers, the main risk is finding a car that has been maintained inconsistently or driven hard enough to show wear sooner than expected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volkswagen Passat?

At 52.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of uneven wear, since those details matter more when a large portion of the market has prior damage history.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S includes 16-inch alloys, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto headlights, a 5-inch touchscreen with reversing camera, cruise control, and forward-collision warning with auto braking. Moving up to the R-Line adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, VW App Connect, 19-inch alloys, heated front seats, power driver adjustment, pleather, and a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen with HD and satellite radio. The SE adds keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, adaptive cruise, and rear air vents, while the SEL Premium adds leather, a driver memory system, power-folding mirrors, a Fender stereo, and lane-departure warning.
• Powertrain: The 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder delivers 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque with 23 mpg city and 34 highway, and it is the better value than the 3.6-liter V6. The V6 brings 280 hp and stronger acceleration, but it costs more and uses more fuel.
• Safety package: Every Passat gets forward-collision warning with auto braking. Above the base S, you also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts and VW App Connect. The SEL Premium adds lane-departure warning.
• Infotainment: The base car uses a 5-inch touchscreen, while higher trims can get a 6.3-inch unit. VW App Connect is available above the base S, and the Technology Package adds navigation and an upgraded infotainment system.
• Fuel efficiency: The 1.8-liter engine returns 23 mpg city and 34 highway, while the 3.6-liter V6 is rated at 20 mpg city and 28 highway.

Which 2017 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2017 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium, and GT.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want useful standard equipment like dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera, and forward-collision warning with auto braking. It makes sense if you care more about price than tech extras.
• R-Line: This trim is the first one that adds the features many shoppers will want, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and VW App Connect. It also brings a larger touchscreen and more upscale cabin touches, but the 19-inch wheels may hurt ride comfort.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds keyless entry, push-button start, a sunroof, adaptive cruise, and rear air vents without a huge price jump. It gives you a strong mix of comfort and convenience.
• SEL Premium: Choose this if you want the most upscale Passat experience, with leather, memory settings, a Fender stereo, and lane-departure warning. It is the right pick if you want near-luxury features and are willing to pay more.
• GT: This trim is the performance-oriented choice, pairing the V6 with a sportier setup. It suits you if power matters more than fuel economy or value.

Every Passat trim above the base S gets blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts and VW App Connect, and every Passat also comes with forward-collision warning with autonomous braking.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Passat?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.

• Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 808 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.63% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 52.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,493, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $10,493 sits slightly below last year's $11,003.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means the model has already absorbed some depreciation. If you plan to resell later, the Passat’s value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and whether you choose a well-equipped trim that stays appealing to used buyers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The Passat earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with a four-star rating in front-impact protection, and IIHS testing found it earning top marks in all categories.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Passat gets forward-collision warning with autonomous braking, and trims above the base S add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts and VW App Connect. The SEL Premium also adds lane-departure warning. The main caveat is that the front-impact result is not perfect, so you should still pay close attention to crash history and repair quality on any used example.

Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.63% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds more standard safety and tech across the lineup, including blind-spot monitoring and VW App Connect above the base S.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $9,066, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,493 average.
• It appeals to buyers who value straightforward, practical family-sedan use.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $12,250, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $10,493 average.
• It brings extra power and a new GT trim for buyers who want more engagement.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, equipment, and broad appeal, the 2017 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 can save you money, while the 2018 makes sense if you want more power and are willing to pay for it.

How does the 2017 Volkswagen Passat compare to the 2017 Toyota Camry?

Our experts score the 2017 Volkswagen Passat 7.3/10 and the 2017 Toyota Camry 7.5/10. The Camry edges ahead on expert score and has a stronger used-price position in this comparison, but the Passat offers a lower average used price and a better deal share. If you want the more affordable buy with more available listings, the Passat is compelling; if you want the slightly higher-scoring choice, the Camry has the edge.
