Is the 2017 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Volkswagen Passat earns 4.9/5 from owners and 7.3/10 from our experts. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, fuel efficiency, and value for money, along with the spacious interior and enjoyable driving experience. Is the 2017 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners also describe it as reliable and low-maintenance, with language that points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience over time. The driving impression reinforces that theme with predictable, linear power delivery and a car that feels easy to live with day to day.

The Passat’s standard 1.8-liter turbo four-cylinder is presented as the better long-term bet than the more expensive V6, which helps keep ownership risk lower for used buyers who want simpler, more efficient running costs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volkswagen Passat?

At 55.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, repairs, and wear items. Focus on condition first, especially if you’re comparing similarly priced cars, because the market includes enough accident history that a clean example is worth extra attention. If possible, verify that the car’s equipment and safety features work as expected before you commit.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S includes 16-inch alloys, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto headlights, a 5-inch touchscreen with reversing camera, cruise control, and forward-collision warning with auto braking. Moving up to the R-Line adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, VW App Connect, 19-inch alloys, heated front seats, power for the driver, pleather, and a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen. The SE adds keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, adaptive cruise, rear air vents, and more reasonable 17-inch alloys, while the SEL Premium adds real leather, power-folding mirrors, a Fender stereo, and a lane-departure warning system.
• Powertrain: The 1.8-liter turbo four-cylinder delivers 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque with usable, linear power and 23 mpg city and 34 highway. A 3.6-liter V6 is also mentioned, with 280 hp and 258 lb-ft, but it comes with a significant fuel-economy penalty and higher ownership cost.
• Safety package: Every Passat gets forward-collision warning with autonomous braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts and VW App Connect are standard above the base S, while the SEL Premium adds lane-departure warning. The base trim misses some of the convenience and driver-assistance content found higher up the lineup.
• Infotainment: The base car uses a 5-inch touchscreen, while higher trims can get a 6.3-inch screen. VW App Connect brings Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the Technology Package adds navigation, an upgraded infotainment system with 8 speakers, and other convenience tech.
• Fuel efficiency: The 1.8-liter engine is rated at 23 mpg city and 34 highway, with 27 combined.

Which 2017 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2017 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value starting point if you want the lowest entry price and still want core safety and convenience features like forward-collision warning with auto braking, a reversing camera, dual-zone climate control, and cruise control.
• R-Line: This trim adds the missing tech and driver-assistance features many shoppers will want, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and VW App Connect, plus a more upscale appearance and heated front seats. It’s the best-value choice if you want the biggest jump in equipment without going all the way to the top.
• SE: This is the sweet spot for many buyers because it adds keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, adaptive cruise, rear air vents, and more reasonable 17-inch wheels. It gives you a strong mix of comfort and value.
• SEL Premium: Choose this if you want the most upscale Passat experience, with real leather, a Fender stereo, power-folding mirrors, a driver memory system, and a lane-departure warning system.

The safety-package content makes the upper trims especially appealing if you want blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and smartphone integration built in.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Passat?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 823 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.20% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 55.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,530, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $10,548 sits slightly below last year's $11,010.

That softer pricing suggests the Passat has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you keep the car in clean condition and avoid overpaying up front, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell.

The market still shows meaningful demand for well-priced examples, and the model’s strong owner satisfaction helps support buyer interest over time.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The 2017 Volkswagen Passat earns five-star ratings from NHTSA, with a four-star rating in front-impact protection, and IIHS top marks across all categories.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Passat gets forward-collision warning with autonomous braking, and trims above the base S add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts plus VW App Connect. The SEL Premium also adds lane-departure warning. The main caveat is that the front-impact result is a step below perfect, and braking performance is only average.

Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.20% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 adds standard blind-spot monitoring above the base trim and forward-collision warning with autonomous braking.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $9,173, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,548 average.
• A practical, value-focused midsize sedan with a straightforward, conservative appeal.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $12,182, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $10,548 average.
• It adds an upgraded 4-cylinder engine and a new GT trim with more sportiness.

The bottom line: The 2017 is the right pick if you want the best mix of price, safety content, and owner satisfaction. If you’re most price-sensitive, the 2016 can save you money; if you want more performance and are willing to pay up, the 2018 is the better step forward.
