How much does the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R cost?

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R a good car?

Yes — it earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The 2017 Volkswagen Golf R is built for you if you want a performance hatchback that still works as an everyday car, with all-wheel drive, strong power, and a setup that can feel at home on both winding roads and the highway. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10. It also brings standard front and rear parking sensors, lane-departure warning and intervention, auto high beams, navigation, and Dynamic Chassis Control, which helps justify its higher price. 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The Golf R’s appeal comes from its blend of everyday usability and serious capability, and the expert review reinforces that it’s a well-equipped, high-performance hatch with all-wheel drive and a strong feature set. Its performance hardware and standard driver-assistance equipment suggest a car that was engineered to do a lot without feeling stripped down. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a performance-focused car can be more expensive to keep in top shape, so condition and maintenance history matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volkswagen Golf R?

At 63.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been driven hard or modified. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the car’s equipment and driver-assistance features are functioning as expected. Because this is a performance hatchback, you’ll want to pay close attention to how it has been maintained and whether wear items show signs of heavier use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The fully equipped version adds standard safety systems, navigation, and Dynamic Chassis Control, while the earlier base version lacked those features. That makes the newer, better-equipped setup the one most buyers will want to target.
• Powertrain: It uses an amped-up 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with all-wheel drive, and the expert review notes strong acceleration with power that builds later and then comes on hard. The DSG dual-clutch transmission is quick, while the manual is described as the more engaging choice.
• Safety package: The standard Driver Assistance Package includes parking sensors front and rear, forward collision warning and intervention, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise, and auto high beams. The base version did not include these systems.
• Infotainment: Navigation is standard, and the car includes the broader tech package that comes with the standard driver-assistance equipment.
• Fuel efficiency: No fuel-economy figure is stated in the provided data.

Which 2017 Volkswagen Golf R trim should I buy?

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf R is offered in 1 trim level: Dynamic Chassis Control with Navigation.

Here's the short version:

The Dynamic Chassis Control with Navigation trim is the one to buy because it bundles the equipment most buyers will want, including the standard driver-assistance package, navigation, and adaptive suspension. It’s the best-value choice here because the earlier limited-release base version is described as lacking those features, while this version gives you the full everyday-usability and performance mix the Golf R is known for.

The safety-package setup is a major part of the appeal, so make sure the car you’re considering has the standard Driver Assistance Package equipment intact and working.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Golf R?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 127 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.76% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 63.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $22,374, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R's resale value?

The current average of $22,775 sits slightly above last year's $22,381.

That year-over-year increase suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you should have a decent shot at preserving value because demand is still present and pricing has not softened. The fact that the average price remains above last year’s level also points to steady buyer interest rather than a weakening market.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R safe?

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf R earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, despite receiving four-star ratings in the overall front and front passenger tests. It earns a Top Safety Pick from IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard Driver Assistance Package includes parking sensors front and rear, forward collision warning and intervention, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise, and auto high beams. One caveat is that IIHS gave the car poor marks for headlight visibility to the sides, especially around corners. There’s also a note that child-seat anchor clearance was somewhat frustrating for testers.

Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Golf R or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.76% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Earlier this year, the base Golf R was a very limited-release trim, and the version you’re likely to find now comes with the standard safety systems, navigation, and Dynamic Chassis Control.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of performance, everyday usability, and standard equipment, the 2017 is the one to focus on. If you’re more price-sensitive, shop carefully for a well-kept example and prioritize condition over mileage alone, since the market still rewards clean, well-equipped cars.

How does the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R compare to the 2017 Ford Focus RS?
