What’s New for the 2027 Volkswagen Golf R
For 2027, the Volkswagen Golf R carries over mostly unchanged. However, the Black Edition makes a return, doubling the trim lineup to two. The Black Edition features black exterior trim and emblems, darkened front lighting, black wheels over black brake calipers, and black exhaust tips. The optional Euro Style package features a weight-saving titanium exhaust system and ArtVelours sport seats.
Design
Although sporty small cars tend toward aggressive styling, the Golf R is perhaps one of the more mature offerings in the segment, at least in terms of looks. It’s more eye-catching than its Golf GTI sibling, but not by much. It’s fairly practical, too, thanks to its spacious body style.
Powertrain
The Golf R features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated for 328 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, plus a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD). It’s a shame that the Golf R isn't available with a manual transmission, but the paddle shifters add some interest. The Golf R has a low center of gravity and remains stable through curves. Fuel economy ratings are 22 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined, and it requires premium fuel.
Interior
The Volkswagen Golf R seats five, though the second row will likely be uncomfortable for more than two adults. The interior is sophisticated and minimalist, though it’s on the impersonal side, with mostly dark finishes. The standard leather sport seats keep drivers in place with snug bolsters, and the optional Euro Style package adds some visual interest with patterned cloth upholstery. Standard features include heated front and outboard rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and ventilated front seats. The Golf R can stow 19.9 cubic feet of cargo behind the second row, and up to 34.5 cubic feet with the second row folded down.
Technology
The Golf R features Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit, a configurable 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and a 12.9-inch touchscreen. The system typically responds quickly to inputs and is user-friendly. However, the usual physical controls for functions such as lighting, climate, and audio are housed in different touch-capacitive panels that take some getting used to. Standard features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, keyless entry, and a Harman Kardon audio system.
