CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota Sequoia

Summary
With 29 currently listed for sale near Rochester, NY and an average price of $25,500, 17.2% of 2017 Toyota Sequoias for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota Sequoia 4.5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota Sequoia stands out as a large, truck-based SUV built for buyers who want three rows of seating and the durability that comes with a body-on-frame design. It shares its platform with the Tundra, and Toyota’s buying guide emphasizes the Sequoia’s North American focus, its family-hauling mission, and its reputation for dependable powertrains. That combination gives it a clear identity: it is a full-size SUV that prioritizes toughness, towing ability, and long-term durability over carlike refinement.
What makes the 2017 model especially appealing is the Sequoia’s established formula. The guide describes the second-generation Sequoia as a reliable family hauler with tried-and-true components, and it notes that all Sequoias from 2013 onward got the 5.7-liter V8. It also highlights the sliding rear window as a standout feature, while warning that the rear window mechanism can be a problem area and that frame rust is something shoppers should inspect carefully. The same section also points out that brakes are a common wear item because of the Sequoia’s size and 6,000-pound curb weight.
For buyers considering a used 2017 Toyota Sequoia, the appeal is straightforward: it offers the space, strength, and reputation for reliability that many large SUV shoppers want, while still carrying some of the compromises of a truck-based design. Fuel economy is a known weak point, and the ride can be truck-like, but those drawbacks are part of the Sequoia’s character.

Nice driving vehicle. Good features on the limited model. The only thing this one did not have was a remote starter option, which we will get installed. This the reason for the 4 star and not 5 star rating.

Good ride and lots of room. Like most of the controls except some could be more user friendly, IE: have to push button every time to fold in mirrors. Should be setting to do it automatically. Our last sequoia lasted forever and we NEVER had to do a thing to it. If this ones is as good, Ill be over the top happy!

How much does the 2017 Toyota Sequoia cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $27,469 |
| Year-Round Low | $26,705 |
| Year-Round High | $30,145 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,868 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.43% |
Prices have softened 1.43% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 276 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2017 Toyota Sequoia a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Toyota Sequoia earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which lines up with its role as a large, truck-based SUV built for three-row family hauling, towing, and long-term durability. The overview points to a body-on-frame design, a North American focus, and a reputation for dependable powertrains, so you should expect a vehicle that prioritizes toughness and utility over carlike refinement. It also highlights the Sequoia’s established formula and tried-and-true components, which helps explain why it appeals to buyers who want a traditional full-size SUV. 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Toyota Sequoia reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview describes the Sequoia as a reliable family hauler with tried-and-true components, and it emphasizes the model’s reputation for dependable powertrains and durable construction. It also notes that the 2017 Sequoia uses the long-running 5.7-liter V8, which reinforces its established, proven character. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the core drivetrain and more about wear-related issues that can come with age and heavy use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Sequoia?
At 55.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and service consistency before you get too far into the process. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on the rear window mechanism, frame rust, and brake wear, since those are the areas the overview flags as worth careful attention. Because this is a large, truck-based SUV, condition matters a lot: look closely at signs of hard use, especially if the vehicle was used for towing or family hauling.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Sequoia?
This looks like a moderate market where selective buyers can still find value if they shop carefully.

- Inventory: There are 276 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.43% compared with last year.

What is the 2017 Toyota Sequoia's resale value?
The current average of $27,469 sits slightly below last year's $27,868.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer but may temper short-term upside if you're planning to resell soon. Even so, the Sequoia’s durable reputation and family-hauling appeal can help support demand among shoppers who want a full-size SUV with proven hardware. Because it sits in a niche with clear strengths, well-kept examples should remain easier to market than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Sequoia or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.43% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is a solid choice if you want the Sequoia’s traditional strengths — space, toughness, and a proven full-size SUV formula — and you’re willing to inspect carefully for condition. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-documented example rather than chasing the lowest sticker price.
