CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota Highlander
overall

Summary
With 2,069 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,501.00, 31.7% of 2017 Toyota Highlanders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota Highlander 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
61.0% of 2017 Highlander models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota Highlander stands out as a family-oriented crossover that was refreshed to stay competitive. Toyota gave it updated styling, an updated V6 engine, a new sport-oriented SE trim, and made its Safety Sense system standard, giving the Highlander a stronger mix of appearance, performance, and safety equipment than before.
That combination helps explain why the Highlander remained appealing to buyers looking for a comfortable and well-equipped SUV. The available owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for its comfort, power, and smooth driving experience, along with its family-friendly design and useful features. At the same time, some owners noted disappointment with the spare tire and bucket seat options, so the Highlander’s strengths are balanced by a few practical compromises.

Nicest car I’ve ever owned! Beautiful color, absolutely loaded with options. Comfortable, great power, handles well in snow. Easy access to third row with captains’ seats in second row. Easy to operate radio/clock/blue tooth. It’s similar to Honda Pilot, but maybe a bit smaller. I traded in a Honda CRX and found Highlander just as easy to drive and park. Excellent value.

With 32.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively while still finding value.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to comfort, smooth driving, and overall value, which are the kinds of traits that usually matter most when you want a vehicle you can count on over time.
The expert drive notes that Toyota added a more capable V6 and an 8-speed automatic, and the overall impression is that the powertrain is well matched to the Highlander’s size. The cost-effectiveness notes also suggest the V6 is the version that makes the most sense, which matters if you want a used SUV that feels properly sorted rather than underpowered.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is choosing a poorly equipped or less desirable configuration, so it pays to focus on condition, maintenance history, and the right trim.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?
At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Pay close attention to body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment on the vehicle matches the trim level you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base setup includes alloy wheels, heated mirrors, Bluetooth, wiper de-icers, and standard Toyota Safety Sense, but it still starts from a more basic equipment set than the higher trims. The LE Plus adds the features many shoppers will want sooner, including tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate.
- Powertrain: The 3.5-liter V6 is the engine to focus on, since the base 4-cylinder is described as underpowered and unrefined for this SUV’s size. The V6 pairs with an 8-speed automatic, and the setup is tuned for stronger everyday drivability and better mileage than before.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. That standard coverage is a major advantage, especially because it arrives on every trim.
- Infotainment: The LE Plus brings an 8-inch touchscreen, while higher trims add more luxury and convenience features. The tech story also includes four USB charge ports, which is a practical plus for family use.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined with rear-wheel drive, or 19 city, 26 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive. Real-world driving returned an average of 19 mpg.
Which 2017 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2017 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The LE is the least compelling choice because it comes with the underpowered 4-cylinder and a more basic feature set, even though it does include standard Toyota Safety Sense.
- Sweet-spot trim: The LE Plus is where you should start looking, since it adds the 8-inch touchscreen, tri-zone climate control, power driver’s seat, and power liftgate without jumping all the way to luxury pricing.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the best pick if you want the most comfort and convenience, with features like rear parking sensors, heated and ventilated front seats, a driver memory system, a JBL sound system, and second-row captain’s chairs.
- Off-road trim: The SE is the one to consider if you want the sportier suspension and styling, but it is really more about road feel than off-road ability.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,093 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.14% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,630.47, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $20,489 sits slightly below last year's $21,154.
That kind of softening can make the vehicle more attractive to used buyers now, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively if the market stays steady. A model with broad family appeal, standard safety equipment, and strong owner satisfaction tends to hold attention better than one with a narrower audience.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander safe?
The Highlander earns top marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, with an IIHS top score across tests except for an Acceptable rating for headlights, and a five-star overall NHTSA rating. It also earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. That standard package is a major strength, especially because it gives you a strong baseline of driver assistance even on lower trims.
The main caveat is the headlights result, which keeps the IIHS score from being perfect.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.14% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Toyota’s updated V6, new 8-speed transmission, and standard Safety Sense make this year especially well-rounded.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, safety, and family-friendly usability, the 2017 is a smart target year. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can shop aggressively for a clean, well-maintained example and use the softened pricing to your advantage.
