The cabin is roomy, the trunk is larger than before, and the car’s platform-sharing with the Lexus ES helps reinforce its upscale feel. Is the 2017 Toyota Avalon reliable?

The Avalon’s comfort-first design, standard safety equipment, and reputation for being easy to live with all point toward a sedan built for steady everyday use. Its quiet ride and roomy cabin make it especially appealing if you want a relaxed highway cruiser rather than something sporty.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about excitement and more about making sure the car has been maintained well enough to preserve its smooth, dependable character.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Avalon?

At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report first so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of uneven wear, since condition matters a lot when you’re shopping a comfort-focused sedan. Pay close attention to how the cabin, electronics, and controls feel in real use, because the Avalon’s appeal depends heavily on a refined day-to-day experience.

Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Avalon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.87% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $17,061, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $18,871 average.
• It brings a refreshed face and updated cabin tech.

The bottom line: If you want the newer year with stronger market momentum and a solid satisfaction signal, the 2017 is the better default choice. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2016 is the smarter secondary path, especially if you find one in excellent condition.
