Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota 4Runner is a standout in the midsize SUV segment, known for its rugged reliability and impressive off-road capabilities. This model has maintained its body-on-frame construction, which is increasingly rare among its competitors that have shifted to unibody designs. The 4Runner's solid build quality and off-road prowess make it a favorite among adventure enthusiasts. It features modern amenities such as wireless Apple CarPlay and advanced safety technologies, while still retaining the gritty character that has defined the 4Runner for decades. Owners appreciate its long-lasting value and reliability, although some note that it may not be the best choice for city driving due to its size and fuel economy. Overall, the 2017 4Runner offers a compelling mix of durability, technology, and off-road capability, making it an appealing option for buyers looking for a dependable SUV.

I thought this was a very solid purchase. Ive owned the vehicle for about 5 years and have been happy with the purchase. My only complaint is that I thought the sound system could have been a little better. It was still good but I like to listen to my music loud so it would most likely be satisfactory for most people

4Runner is the last of the real SUV’s….in a world flooded with cutesy crossovers and bloated luxury barges, the 4Runner stands alone as a rugged, do it all vehicle. Simplicity and quality will always outshine “tech” and disposability.

| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,609 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.80% |
Prices have softened 1.80% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,537 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $25,716.42, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, ruggedness, solid construction, and long-lasting value. That lines up well if you want an SUV that can handle off-road use and still serve as a dependable daily vehicle, though some owners note it is less ideal for city driving.
With 33.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback emphasizes reliability, ruggedness, solid construction, and long-lasting value, with language that points to a vehicle you can count on over time. That kind of reputation matters if you want a used SUV that should hold up well with regular ownership.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about how each individual example was maintained and driven.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota 4Runner?
At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can catch hidden damage or deferred maintenance. Focus closely on body condition, signs of prior repairs, and whether the vehicle’s rugged use matches its current wear.
Because this model is often chosen for tougher driving, it pays to be especially careful about underbody condition and overall mechanical health.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market, so you can buy now if the right listing appears, but selective shopping still matters.
- Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,537 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.80% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $25,716.42, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $27,111 sits slightly below last year's $27,609.
That modest decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now and still leave room for future value retention. If you purchase at a competitive price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be better positioned when it comes time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.80% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,544, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $27,111 average.
- It emphasizes true off-road capability.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2017 is the better primary target. If your budget is tighter and you want to spend less upfront, the 2016 is the more price-sensitive alternative.
