The user feedback points to a car that many owners enjoy for its advanced technology, performance, and luxurious feel, with some describing it as still feeling cutting-edge years later. That kind of enthusiasm often suggests a vehicle that can deliver a satisfying ownership experience when it has been well maintained. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been cared for properly, since condition and history matter a lot on a tech-heavy EV.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Tesla Model S?

At 73.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, ownership changes, and any other red flags before you commit. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, with extra attention to overall condition, electronics, and signs of wear that could affect long-term ownership. Because this is a technology-forward EV, you’ll want to focus on how well the car has been maintained rather than just the odometer reading.

The current average of $20,794 sits slightly below last year's $21,397.

That tells you the market has softened a bit, which can matter if you plan to sell later. A lower current price can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means you should be realistic about future appreciation. If you keep the car in strong condition and buy carefully, you’ll be better positioned to protect value when it’s time to move on.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 Tesla Model S or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 73.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.82% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest balance of price, availability, and owner satisfaction, the 2017 is a sensible place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-documented example rather than chasing the lowest sticker price.
