Why it stands out
The 2017 Tesla Model S stands out as a luxury electric sedan that helped define what a modern EV could be. It was revolutionary for offering more than 200 miles of EV range, a minimalist interior, and an exterior shape guided more by aerodynamics than fashion. It also arrived with a huge 17-inch infotainment screen, generous interior space, and rear-wheel drive, giving it a distinctly futuristic feel that still resonates with buyers looking for something different from a conventional luxury sedan.
What makes the 2017 Model S especially appealing is how much technology and performance it packed in. By this point, Tesla had already added features such as Autopilot hardware, and the Model S lineup had evolved through a series of battery and software changes that kept it competitive. The car’s strengths are clear: impressive range, advanced technology, and sports car-style acceleration. It also benefits from Tesla’s over-the-air updates, which help keep the software current as long as the hardware supports it.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Model S is not known for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and build quality has been a recurring concern. Even so, the 2017 Model S remains distinctive because it combines long-range electric driving, strong performance, and a cabin layout that felt ahead of its time.

I have been reading about this car since it was first built. I read the book about it called The Greatest Car Ever Made. So, I was already pretty hyped up and filled with high expectations. To say that this car still exceeded my expectations is an exciting and hard to believe thing. But there it is. The features have not disappointed. Everything works as advertised. It is fast, handles beautifully and is luxurious. Did I mention that it is F-A-S-T!! The app for my iPhone works seamlessly. We brought it home, plugged it in to your 220 outlet (which we were lucky to have had already installed in our garage, and it all just worked. We did try the 110 out of curiosity to see how long it would take to charge. That would not be a practice solution for anyone with a commute of more than 10 miles or so. The recommended max charge is 80%. In order to go from 40%_80%, it would take almost 2 days. So a 220 outlet of charging unit is necessary. The sheer beauty of this car is breathtaking. If you want the fastest, most sophisticated, most luxurious car money can buy, this in a great option. If you want it to be electric, then this is the ONLY one to buy.

Yes — the 2017 Tesla Model S earns a 4.7/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its performance, advanced technology, and luxurious feel, and many say it still feels cutting-edge years after release. That lines up well with its role as a luxury electric sedan that offers long range, a minimalist cabin, and a futuristic driving experience. With 33.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Tesla Model S reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also highlights that many owners find it dependable over time, with praise for the car’s long-term appeal and the way it continues to feel modern. The strongest reliability takeaway is that satisfaction remains high even among used buyers who have lived with the car for years. For you, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific example you choose has been well cared for and checked thoroughly before purchase.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Tesla Model S?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should start with the history report so you can confirm accident status, ownership pattern, and any red flags tied to the car’s past. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on overall condition, because used EVs can vary a lot in wear and maintenance history. Pay close attention to how the car presents inside and out, since condition is a major part of getting the best value on a Model S.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Tesla Model S?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 426 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.03% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,513, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Tesla Model S's resale value?
The current average of $21,155 sits slightly below last year's $21,818.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also mean future resale gains are limited. If you plan to sell later, your best protection is choosing a well-kept example with strong history and broad buyer appeal. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Tesla Model S or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.03% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, availability, and owner satisfaction, the 2017 is a strong place to start. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-priced listing rather than the model year alone.
