CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru WRX

Summary
With 90 currently listed for sale near Pittsburgh, PA and an average price of $14,495, 24.4% of 2017 Subaru WRXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru WRX 4.67 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru WRX stands out as a practical sports sedan with rally roots, built around a turbocharged Boxer engine and standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Subaru’s formula gives it the kind of traction and driving character that enthusiasts tend to value, and the car’s reputation is built on being fun to drive while still remaining usable day to day. Owners also consistently praise its handling, acceleration, and all-wheel-drive capability, which reinforces the WRX’s appeal as an enthusiast car that does not give up everyday practicality.
For 2017, the WRX’s available technology and comfort features were still fairly modest by modern standards. The source notes that advanced tech such as adaptive cruise control was not available, and the pros and cons summary calls out outdated technology, a cramped back seat in older models, and poor fuel economy. That mix makes the 2017 WRX especially appealing to buyers who care more about performance and grip than luxury or efficiency.

This car is loads of fun to drive. The handling, the acceleration are awesome. The infotainment system works for me. I like the interface of it. The limited comes with the Nav. System and the upgraded speakers, both of which I enjoy straight away.

Car runs great, turbo really picks up nicely has great power, the premium model had great features. The controls on the steering wheel are well placed great back up camera amazing moon roof and really spacious for a sedan. A little overpriced for the minimal features you get unless you really want to go all out with the more top of the line model but great car overall.

Reviewed a 2017 Subaru WRX on May 28, 2021
This is a car not for the economy seeker, but for an enthusiast. It has very respectable performance, is built extremely well and retains its value unlike near all other sport sedans on the market. Plus its lines are just gorgeous ( to me, of course). Seats are meant for narrow hips so anyone above average wont be comfortable, and clutch pretty heavy so bring your NFL kicking leg for any stop and go traffic. Honda type R would probably be the closest competition in my mind, but AWD is the definite deal sealer in my mind, especially with ambitions to move north. This is a super car for its cost. Highly recommended

Is the 2017 Subaru WRX a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Subaru WRX earns a 4.67/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its exciting performance, impressive handling, acceleration, and all-wheel drive capability. That lines up well with the model’s practical sports-sedan setup, especially if you want a car that feels engaging without giving up everyday usability. With 30.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2017 Subaru WRX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also points to a car that owners enjoy living with over time, especially because of its dependable all-wheel drive capability and the confidence it brings in daily use. The recurring praise for performance and handling suggests many buyers feel comfortable counting on it as both a fun and usable car. For used buyers, that kind of satisfaction can help reduce long-term ownership risk, though condition and maintenance history still matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru WRX?
At 55.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage or modified example. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the car has been maintained consistently, since those factors matter more when the market includes a sizable share of incident history.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru WRX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile opportunities.

- Clean inventory: 55.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,422, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru WRX's resale value?
The current average of $15,447 sits slightly below last year's $16,379.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can be a mixed signal for future resale. If you buy now, you may benefit from softer entry pricing, but you should also expect resale value to depend heavily on condition and how well the car is presented later. A well-kept WRX should still attract interest from shoppers who want performance and all-wheel drive in one package.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $14,462, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $15,447 average.
- It offers a more value-focused, everyday-friendly performance feel.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-year market context and are comfortable paying a bit more, the 2017 is the better primary target. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2016 is the smarter secondary path, especially if you find one in strong condition.
