CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru Outback

Summary
With 2,038 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,527.00, 31.6% of 2017 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru Outback 4.65 / 5 stars.
64.1% of 2017 Outback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Outback stands out as a practical, roomy wagon-turned-crossover that leans hard into all-weather capability. By this generation, Subaru had already moved the Outback further away from the Legacy, and the result was a vehicle that emphasized space, ground clearance, and a more crossover-like shape while still keeping the brand’s standard all-wheel drive. It also carried Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist technology, which had been part of the model for years and helped reinforce the Outback’s reputation as a safety-minded family vehicle.
What makes the 2017 model especially appealing is the balance it strikes between usefulness and everyday comfort. The fifth-generation Outback brought a quieter, more refined ride than earlier versions, along with a more spacious cabin and a little more back seat room. It also offered a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, while the available 3.6R model added a six-cylinder option for buyers who wanted more power. On the feature side, the lineup included infotainment updates such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the newer 6.5- and 8-inch screen setup, and upper trims could be equipped with more advanced driver-assist features.
At the same time, the 2017 Outback is not without compromises. The CVT can feel droney and somewhat listless on the highway, and it still does not return especially strong fuel mileage. Even so, its combination of standard AWD, generous practicality, and a long list of available safety equipment makes it a compelling choice for buyers who value capability and comfort over sporty driving manners.

I love this car. The exterior is beautiful, and the interior looks $10k above its class. I’m changing all of the interior lights to led because the yellow incandescent glow looks out of place. Some of the included features, like lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring, seem unnecessary, but probably welcome inclusions for someone with less than stellar driving. Overall, 8/10. I will definitely be keeping it until repairs become too expensive.

Good solid car to replace Hyundai Santa Fe that was totaled from Hurricane Helene. The 4 cylinder is peppy and for the first tank, getting great gas mileage. It will be easier on the wallet and goes farther on an 18 gallon tank than the Santa Fe.

I believe that the car has many nice features to enjoy, but will have to learn and acquire the knowledge as how to use these features as time permits. I want to be better and more comfortable knowing where everything is after driving Hondas for more than 30 years, this is my 1st Subaru

Excellent car,it has the 3.6 in it,It tows my trailers effortlessly. Its incredible in the snow.We have had an Impreza, and 2 Foresters, all have been excellent, but the Outback is by far our favorite. Other than oil changes tires and brakes repairs have been limited to wheel bearing on the Impreza, after 16 years of owning it.One of the best cars around in my opinion, and Ive been a mechanic since 1976

2017 Subaru Outback Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2017 Subaru Outback prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2017 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,484 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,091.38 |
| Year-Round High | $15,105.71 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,102 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.09% |
Prices have softened 4.09% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,062 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and conditions.
If you find a listing below $14,091.38, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.65/5, which points to strong overall satisfaction. Reviewers repeatedly praise the safety features, spacious interior, and reliability, and they also like the comfortable ride and AWD capability. For you, that makes it a strong fit if you want a practical, roomy vehicle that works well for everyday driving and changing weather. With 30.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. In owner feedback, the Outback is described as reliable, and drivers also highlight its dependable AWD capability and trouble-free everyday use. That combination suggests you can approach used ownership with confidence, though you should still verify maintenance history and condition before buying.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Outback?
At 64.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can catch hidden body, suspension, or repair issues. Focus closely on overall condition, especially signs of prior damage, uneven wear, or anything that suggests the car has had a harder life than the listing implies.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Outback?
This is a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you have room to shop, but the best examples still deserve quick action.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,062 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.09% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,091.38, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $14,484 sits slightly below last year's $15,102.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable entry point, but it also means future resale gains may depend more on condition, mileage, and maintenance than on broad market appreciation. If you keep the vehicle clean and well documented, you improve your odds of holding value better than average. Strong demand for practical, safety-minded vehicles can also help support pricing when you eventually sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.09% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,738, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,484 average.
- It emphasizes spaciousness, comfort, and family-friendly practicality.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,208, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,484 average.
- It adds broad appeal with car-like dynamics, good fuel economy, and strong safety.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, owner satisfaction, and everyday usefulness, the 2017 is the primary path to consider. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 is the better price-sensitive alternative, while the 2018 makes sense if you are willing to pay more for a newer model-year option.
