Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Outback is a standout choice for buyers seeking a versatile and reliable vehicle. Known for its impressive all-wheel drive (AWD) capabilities, the Outback excels in various driving conditions, making it a great option for those who enjoy outdoor adventures or live in areas with inclement weather. Owners appreciate its spacious interior, which offers ample room for passengers and cargo, along with a comfortable ride. The Outback is also equipped with a suite of safety features that enhance its appeal, contributing to its strong reputation for reliability. However, some users have noted that the engine, particularly the 2.5L version, can feel underpowered, and there are suggestions for improvements in the infotainment system. Overall, the 2017 Outback combines practicality with a rugged image, making it a popular choice among families and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

I love this car. The exterior is beautiful, and the interior looks $10k above its class. I’m changing all of the interior lights to led because the yellow incandescent glow looks out of place. Some of the included features, like lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring, seem unnecessary, but probably welcome inclusions for someone with less than stellar driving. Overall, 8/10. I will definitely be keeping it until repairs become too expensive.

Good solid car to replace Hyundai Santa Fe that was totaled from Hurricane Helene. The 4 cylinder is peppy and for the first tank, getting great gas mileage. It will be easier on the wallet and goes farther on an 18 gallon tank than the Santa Fe.

I believe that the car has many nice features to enjoy, but will have to learn and acquire the knowledge as how to use these features as time permits. I want to be better and more comfortable knowing where everything is after driving Hondas for more than 30 years, this is my 1st Subaru

Excellent car,it has the 3.6 in it,It tows my trailers effortlessly. Its incredible in the snow.We have had an Impreza, and 2 Foresters, all have been excellent, but the Outback is by far our favorite. Other than oil changes tires and brakes repairs have been limited to wheel bearing on the Impreza, after 16 years of owning it.One of the best cars around in my opinion, and Ive been a mechanic since 1976

2017 Subaru Outback Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2017 Subaru Outback prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2017 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,625 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,092.16 |
| Year-Round High | $15,329.68 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,327 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.58% |
Prices have softened 4.58% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,149 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $14,092.16, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Subaru Outback earns a 4.65/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the safety features, spacious interior, and reliability, and they also value the comfortable ride and AWD capability. That makes it a strong fit if you want a practical vehicle for families, commuting, or outdoor use. With 31.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes reliability, dependable everyday use, and a trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers. That kind of praise matters if you want a vehicle you can count on for commuting, family duty, or weekend travel. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is choosing a poorly maintained example, so condition and service history should carry real weight.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Outback?
At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus your attention on overall condition, maintenance evidence, and any signs of past repair work.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Outback?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop thoughtfully and still find worthwhile opportunities if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,149 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.58% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,092.16, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $14,625 sits slightly below last year's $15,327.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, a well-kept example with strong documentation should hold up better than one with questionable history. The Outback's broad appeal and steady owner satisfaction should continue to support demand, even if pricing remains competitive.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.58% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,685, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,625 average.
- It emphasizes a comfortable, spacious cabin with strong practicality.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,248, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,625 average.
- It adds a more refined ride and improved cabin quietness.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the best all-around choice if you want a well-liked, value-conscious Outback with strong owner satisfaction and decent deal availability. If your priority is saving money, the 2016 is the smarter path. If you're willing to pay more for a newer-feeling experience, the 2018 is worth a look.
