CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru Crosstrek

Summary
With 132 currently listed for sale near Milwaukee, WI and an average price of $13,332.00, 31.8% of 2017 Subaru Crosstreks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek 4.88 / 5 stars.
70.5% of 2017 Crosstrek models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Crosstrek stands out as a compact crossover that blends everyday practicality with Subaru’s familiar all-weather formula. It has generous ground clearance, protective body cladding, and a sturdy pedestal-style roof rack, giving it a rugged look and useful capability without moving up to a larger SUV. The 2017 model also benefits from the first generation’s emphasis on utility: it offers seating for four, or five if necessary, along with 22.3 to 51.9 cu-ft of cargo space.
What makes the 2017 Crosstrek appealing is its simple, durable character. Subaru’s four-cylinder engine and standard five-speed manual gearbox keep the driving experience straightforward, while the available CVT is part of the package for buyers who want an automatic. It is also a vehicle that feels at home on rougher surfaces, since the source describes it as fun to toss around on dirt roads and capable on moderately challenging trails. For 2017 specifically, Subaru added a special edition in black or red paint colors, and a lane-change assist function arrived for models with blind-spot detection.
At the same time, the 2017 Crosstrek is not a performance vehicle. The source says acceleration was not its strong suit, and the available CVT created a lot more noise than forward momentum. Even so, it remains attractive for buyers who value safety, reliability, fuel efficiency, and a compact footprint over speed.

Reviewed a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek on Apr 19, 2023
The car is very new for me, and Ive driven only about 250 miles so far, but so far I am happy because the car is both capable and has some personality. Mine is crystal white with black leather interior and I love the appearance. It makes me feel happy to walk up to it in the parking lot because it is really cute, and the interior is also attractive. The orange stitching on the seats give the interior a little style; the navigation is bright and clear; and the moonroof keeps it feeling open and airy inside; and the interior is overall logical. The handling is excellent. Ive driven in snow on roads where some cars are sliding and my car was driving along just fine. I havent had issues with acceleration and have been driving 65 mph on the highway without problems. The gas mileage seems quite good and the gas tank seems to be big enough as I still have half a tank of gas after going about 250 miles. The Eyesight and other safety features also give me a feeling of security. Visibility is also great. There are just a few negatives that Ive noticed so far. The biggest negative Ive noticed is that the bottom cushion of the drivers seat is too hard. The back of the seat and headrest are actually very comfortable so its really just the bottom. I also wish that the seat could be adjusted electrically instead of manually. The other thing that I would change is the placement of the buttons for the seat warmers. When driving, I have to reach behind and feel around to try to find it or look back for it. Other than the padding in the bottom of the seat, the lack of electric adjustment to the seat and the placement of the heat seater button, I really am happy with this beautiful and capable car. 7/6/17 Update: I continue to be very happy with my car. I love driving it. I like the adaptive cruise control on the highway as well as the little beeper that lets me know if the car in front of me moves when waiting at a traffic light for a while. The seats even became much more comfortable after a few months of use. I have, however, had a few issues with the connection to Audible on my iphone dropping and I really dont know why this happens. Overall, though, very happy with my car and would buy the exact same car if I were to do it again!

We did purchase this car 2 weeks ago. So far so good. Comfortable and easy on gas. It’s all about the reliability with a Subaru, so fingers crossed we can get a few years out of this cross trek.

2017 Subaru Crosstrek Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2017 Subaru Crosstrek prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,299 |
| Year-Round Low | $13,724.85 |
| Year-Round High | $14,755.46 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,673 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.55% |
Prices have softened 2.55% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,542 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $13,724.85, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek a good car?
Yes — the 4.88/5 user rating points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the safety features, smooth handling, and comfortable ride, and many also value the reliability and fuel efficiency for everyday use. For you, that makes this a sensible pick if you want a compact crossover that emphasizes practicality, confidence, and low-stress ownership over speed. With 32.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still opportunities to find a well-priced example.
Is the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also highlights reliability, dependability, and a trouble-free ownership experience, especially for daily driving. That kind of response suggests the Crosstrek has earned trust from people who plan to keep it for the long haul. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by hard use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Crosstrek?
At 60.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage or repeated claims. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus your attention on overall condition, maintenance evidence, and signs of past repairs rather than relying on appearance alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Crosstrek?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,542 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.55% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,724.85, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?
The current average of $14,299 sits slightly below last year's $14,673.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future resale gains may be more gradual than in a rising market. If you plan to sell later, condition and mileage will matter a lot, especially because buyers in this segment tend to compare clean, well-kept examples closely. Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it is time to move on.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.55% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,751, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,299 average.
- It adds useful safety tech and a refreshed look.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,353, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,299 average.
- It brings a full redesign with more rugged capability.
