CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru Crosstrek
Summary
With 1,612 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,055, 33.9% of 2017 Subaru Crosstrek listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek 4.88 / 5 stars.
62.3% of 2017 Subaru Crosstrek listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Crosstrek stands out as a compact crossover that blends everyday practicality with Subaru’s familiar all-weather formula. It offers generous ground clearance, protective body cladding, and a sturdy pedestal-style roof rack, giving it a rugged look and useful capability without moving up to a larger SUV. It is also small inside but exceptionally practical, with seating for four, five if absolutely necessary, and between 22.3 and 51.9 cu-ft of cargo space.
What makes the 2017 model appealing is its straightforward, easy-to-live-with character. It uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 148 horsepower, and the available CVT creates a lot more noise than forward momentum, so acceleration is not its strong suit. Even so, the Crosstrek is fun to toss around on dirt roads and for tackling moderately challenging trails, and it remains a sensible choice for buyers who value utility, safety, and fuel efficiency over speed. For the first-generation’s final model year, it was available as a special edition in black or red paint colors, and a lane-change assist function arrived for models with blind-spot detection.

Reviewed a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek on Apr 19, 2023
The car is very new for me, and Ive driven only about 250 miles so far, but so far I am happy because the car is both capable and has some personality. Mine is crystal white with black leather interior and I love the appearance. It makes me feel happy to walk up to it in the parking lot because it is really cute, and the interior is also attractive. The orange stitching on the seats give the interior a little style; the navigation is bright and clear; and the moonroof keeps it feeling open and airy inside; and the interior is overall logical. The handling is excellent. Ive driven in snow on roads where some cars are sliding and my car was driving along just fine. I havent had issues with acceleration and have been driving 65 mph on the highway without problems. The gas mileage seems quite good and the gas tank seems to be big enough as I still have half a tank of gas after going about 250 miles. The Eyesight and other safety features also give me a feeling of security. Visibility is also great. There are just a few negatives that Ive noticed so far. The biggest negative Ive noticed is that the bottom cushion of the drivers seat is too hard. The back of the seat and headrest are actually very comfortable so its really just the bottom. I also wish that the seat could be adjusted electrically instead of manually. The other thing that I would change is the placement of the buttons for the seat warmers. When driving, I have to reach behind and feel around to try to find it or look back for it. Other than the padding in the bottom of the seat, the lack of electric adjustment to the seat and the placement of the heat seater button, I really am happy with this beautiful and capable car. 7/6/17 Update: I continue to be very happy with my car. I love driving it. I like the adaptive cruise control on the highway as well as the little beeper that lets me know if the car in front of me moves when waiting at a traffic light for a while. The seats even became much more comfortable after a few months of use. I have, however, had a few issues with the connection to Audible on my iphone dropping and I really dont know why this happens. Overall, though, very happy with my car and would buy the exact same car if I were to do it again!

We did purchase this car 2 weeks ago. So far so good. Comfortable and easy on gas. It’s all about the reliability with a Subaru, so fingers crossed we can get a few years out of this cross trek.

Is the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.88/5, which points to strong overall satisfaction. Reviewers consistently praise the safety features, smooth handling, and comfortable ride, and many also value the reliability and fuel efficiency for everyday use. That fits especially well if you want a compact crossover with practical utility, all-weather confidence, and a straightforward ownership experience. Is the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary also highlights reliability, dependability, and a trouble-free ownership experience, with many owners saying it is a vehicle they can count on for daily use. That kind of feedback matters if you plan to keep the car for years and want something that feels steady rather than high-maintenance. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about finding one that has been cared for properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Crosstrek?
At 62.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the listing has any accident history. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, tire wear, and signs of uneven repair quality, since those details can reveal how well the car was restored. It also helps to compare multiple listings so you can separate clean examples from cars that are priced low for a reason.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Crosstrek?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,592 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.37% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,726, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?
The current average of $14,035 sits slightly below last year's $14,524.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can help you if you are shopping now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. Still, the model’s practical appeal and steady demand should help it remain easy to move compared with less popular compact crossovers. Well-kept examples with clean histories are likely to hold value better than higher-risk listings.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.37% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,504, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,035 average.
- It adds useful safety tech and a fresher look.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $15,913, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,035 average.
- It brings a full redesign with a more refined take on the Crosstrek formula.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the best all-around pick if you want strong owner satisfaction, decent deal availability, and a price that has eased from last year. If your priority is saving money, the 2016 is the better value play; if you want the newer redesign and can stretch your budget, the 2018 is the upgrade path to consider.
