The BRZ’s reliability story is tied to its simple, enthusiast-focused mission: it is built around balance, a manual-friendly driving experience, and a relatively straightforward sports-car formula rather than complex performance hardware. That kind of setup can be appealing for used buyers who want a car that stays true to its purpose.

For long-term ownership, your biggest risk is less about luxury complexity and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained and driven responsibly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru BRZ?

At 55.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks for signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, and suspension or wheel damage. The current average of $19,092 sits slightly below last year's $19,832.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can work against you if you plan to sell soon. On the other hand, it may help you buy at a more favorable entry point today, especially if you find a clean example with strong equipment and a good maintenance record.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 Subaru BRZ or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.73% compared with last year.

The bottom line: If you want the BRZ’s core formula with a slightly updated look and a bit more punch from the 2017 refresh, this is the year to target. If your priority is stretching your budget further, a nearby year may be worth considering, but the 2017 remains the better pick when you want the refreshed version of this lightweight sports coupe.
