What should I look for when buying a used 2017 RAM 2500?

At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for towing or work. Focus on overall condition, signs of wear in the cabin and bed, and whether the truck feels tight and well maintained on a test drive. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example with the best documentation is usually the safer buy.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from Tradesman to Limited, with the Tradesman positioned as the most basic work truck. It comes with plain vinyl bench seats, a basic LCD-screen radio, steel wheels, and plastic bumpers, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience. The SLT adds a 5-inch touchscreen, cloth seats, chrome bumpers, a mini trip computer, and SiriusXM, and the Big Horn adds fog lights, a power driver’s seat, a backup camera, and the larger 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen.
• Powertrain: A 5.7-liter V8 is standard, with a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 available for more power and a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel available for buyers who want diesel torque. Gas engines pair with a 6-speed automatic, while the diesel can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. The Power Wagon adds off-road-focused hardware, including Bilstein performance shocks, 33-inch all-terrain tires, skid plates, an integrated winch, an electronically disconnecting front sway bar, and front and rear lockers.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side-impact airbags, tire pressure monitoring, and electronic stability control. A reversing camera is optional, and front and rear parking sensors are available on higher trims. Large mirrors with integrated wide-angle mirrors also help with visibility.
• Infotainment: The Tradesman uses a basic radio with an LCD screen, and Bluetooth is optional there but standard on every other version. SLT, Big Horn, and Power Wagon trims come with a 5-inch color touchscreen, while the 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen is standard on the Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited. There’s no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto yet.
• Fuel efficiency: In a Power Wagon test model with the 6.4-liter Hemi, fuel economy was just under 12 mpg combined.

Which 2017 RAM 2500 trim should I buy?

The 2017 RAM 2500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Tradesman, SLT, Big Horn, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• Tradesman: This is the work-focused choice if you want the lowest entry point and can live with the most basic setup. It keeps things simple with vinyl seats, steel wheels, plastic bumpers, and a basic radio, so it makes sense if you care more about capability than comfort.
• SLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a 5-inch touchscreen, cloth seats, chrome bumpers, a mini trip computer, and SiriusXM without jumping all the way to the luxury end of the lineup. It’s a smart middle ground if you want a more livable truck without overspending.
• Big Horn: This trim is a good step up if you want more convenience and visibility features, including fog lights, a power driver’s seat, a backup camera, and the larger 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen. It suits buyers who want a more modern-feeling daily driver.
• Laramie: If you want a more upscale cabin, the Laramie adds plenty of chrome, heated and ventilated front seats, and front and rear parking sensors. It’s a strong pick if comfort matters as much as capability.
• Laramie Longhorn: This trim sits above the Laramie and is part of the more premium end of the lineup. It’s the kind of version to consider if you want a more upscale truck experience and are willing to pay for it.
• Limited: This is the top trim and the most fully equipped choice, with a unique grille design, full leather interior, remote start, Ram Box cargo management, and lots of chrome. Buy this if you want the most luxury and convenience the lineup offers.

The safety content notes that a reversing camera is optional, so if that feature matters to you, make sure the truck you’re considering has it.

• Inventory: There are 2,446 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.45% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 65.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $30,120, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 RAM 2500's resale value?

The current average of $30,120 sits slightly below last year's $31,523.

That softer pricing suggests the truck is currently more buyer-friendly than it was a year ago, which can matter if you’re planning to sell later. A lower entry price today can also help keep depreciation from feeling as steep if you buy at the right number. For future sellers, the key is to buy a clean, well-documented truck so you’re not competing against cheaper examples with questionable histories.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes front and side-impact airbags, tire pressure monitoring, and electronic stability control. A reversing camera is optional, and front and rear parking sensors are available on higher trims. Large mirrors with integrated wide-angle mirrors also help visibility in traffic and tight spaces.
