Is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder a good car?

Generally — the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder earns a 4.4/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners most often praise its comfort, features, and spaciousness, especially for families. In practical terms, that makes it a strong fit if you want a three-row SUV that prioritizes everyday usability over ruggedness.

The market also shows 29.1% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder reliable?

Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The user feedback points to a vehicle that many owners find comfortable and dependable for family use, with praise for its smooth performance and good gas mileage. The expert drive notes also describe it as a well-rounded family hauler that can handle the job asked of it, which supports the idea that it’s built for steady everyday use rather than drama.

The ownership picture is still worth a close look because some owners have raised concerns about steering issues and tire wear, so a used example should be checked carefully for maintenance history and wear patterns.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Nissan Pathfinder?

At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on steering feel, tire condition, and signs of uneven wear, since those are the kinds of issues owners have flagged. It also helps to compare trim equipment closely so you know whether the features you want are actually present on the listing you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S includes an 8-inch touchscreen, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, roof rails, push-button start, remote keyless entry, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, and three-zone automatic climate control. Higher trims add useful upgrades such as remote start, leather-wrapped controls, a 360-degree camera, heated seats, and a motion-activated liftgate, so the base trim is the one to scrutinize most closely if you want more convenience features.
• Powertrain: The Pathfinder uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 284 horsepower, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. The setup is tuned for family hauling, with strong acceleration and a 6,000-pound towing capacity.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Control with traction control, front and rear crumple zones, LATCH, tire pressure monitoring, and Easy-Fill Tire Alert. Higher trims add blind-spot warning, a 360-degree camera, forward-collision-avoidance, and adaptive cruise control.
• Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and physical controls, and higher trims add navigation with real-time traffic and weather. It does not include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
• Fuel efficiency: The available all-wheel-drive system can be switched to 2-wheel drive for better fuel economy, and the expert notes say the V6 is a better fit than a smaller engine would be for a vehicle this size.

Which 2017 Nissan Pathfinder trim should I buy?

The 2017 Nissan Pathfinder is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SL, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and the core family-hauler basics. You still get the 8-inch touchscreen, reversing camera, Bluetooth, three-zone climate control, and push-button start, but you give up the convenience and safety upgrades found higher up the range.
• SV: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds remote start, fog lights, smart auto-on headlights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and backup sensors without jumping to the pricier luxury-oriented trims.
• SL: This trim is the sweet spot if you want a more upscale feel and more confidence features. It adds leather seating, heated front and rear seats, a 360-degree camera, blind-spot warning, and a motion-activated liftgate.
• Platinum: Choose this if you want the most equipment, including the panoramic moonroof, navigation, upgraded headlights, heated and cooled front seats, and adaptive cruise control.

The safety package expands as you move up the range, with the most advanced driver-assistance features reserved for the higher trims.

What is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder's resale value?

The current average of $10,643 sits slightly below last year's $11,616.

That decline suggests the market has softened, which can work against you if you’re selling soon. On the other hand, it can also make the Pathfinder easier to move if you price it competitively and present it well. For future resale, condition and documented maintenance will matter more because buyers in this segment tend to compare value closely.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.38% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 brings a stronger 284-horsepower V6 and a well-rounded family-hauler setup.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $9,216, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,643 average.
• It covers the basics well with a spacious interior and smooth driving experience.

The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped and more powerful version, the 2017 is the stronger pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 can still make sense as a practical family SUV, especially if you find one in good condition.

How does the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder compare to the 2017 Honda Pilot?
