Why it stands out
The 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport stands out as one of the longest-running and most affordable choices in the subcompact crossover class. By this point in its life, it had already been on sale for several years, and its appeal was less about cutting-edge design than about value, easy drivability, and the practicality of hatchback access, a higher ride height, and available all-wheel drive. It also benefits from the fact that many of its early bugs had been worked out over time, which helps explain why later examples are often viewed as a sensible used buy.
For 2017, the Outlander Sport gained an LE trim between the ES and SE, and the SE was upgraded to the 2.4-liter engine. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto also started to show up in higher-spec models at this time. Those updates make this model year more appealing than earlier versions, especially for shoppers who want a little more equipment without moving into a more expensive crossover. At the same time, the Outlander Sport still carried some familiar drawbacks, including cheap interior materials and a weak engine, so its strengths are more about affordability and simplicity than refinement or performance.

FEATURES are pretty much the standard. The car is a GOOD VALUE. This car does not have heated seats. CRV ect. an on a slightly smaller size SUV and thus has a smaller payload capacity; no third row seating.

Is the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport a good car?
Yes — 5/5 is a strong user rating for this model year, and it fits a vehicle that emphasizes value, easy drivability, and practicality over flash. The 2017 Outlander Sport is positioned as one of the longest-running and most affordable choices in the subcompact crossover class, with hatchback access, a higher ride height, and available all-wheel drive making it especially useful if you want simple everyday utility. It also picked up updates like an LE trim and broader availability of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in higher-spec models, which makes it more appealing than earlier versions if you want a budget-friendly crossover with some modern convenience. 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The 2017 Outlander Sport also benefits from being several years into its lifecycle, which means many early bugs had already been worked out by this point. Its appeal is rooted in simplicity and affordability, and later examples are often viewed as sensible used buys for that reason. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about complexity and more about making sure you choose a well-kept example that hasn’t been worn down by age or neglect.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport?
At 62.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage listing or one priced near the low end of the market. Focus on overall condition, signs of past repairs, and whether the vehicle’s equipment and interior wear match the seller’s description.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s-market discount.
- Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 286 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.69% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,686, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport's resale value?
The current average of $9,728 sits slightly below last year's $10,101.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the softer pricing means you’ll want to buy carefully and avoid overpaying, since resale value will depend heavily on condition and how well the vehicle has been maintained. A clean, well-kept example should still be easier to move than one with accident history or visible wear.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
The 2017 is a smart primary choice if you want a budget-friendly Outlander Sport with useful updates and a strong satisfaction signal, especially if you value affordability and simple day-to-day usability. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may still make sense, but you should compare condition, accident history, and equipment closely so you don’t trade away too much value for a small savings.
