Why it stands out
The 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander sits in the third generation of the model and stands out for combining compact-SUV practicality with a few uncommon traits. It offered third-row seating, which gave it seven-seat versatility that many rivals in its class did not match. By 2017, it also had a six-inch touchscreen and a rearview camera on all models, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were added to the SE trim. The GT trim gained power-folding mirrors and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and buyers could also get an optional heated steering wheel and a surround-view camera system.
That same year also brought a more usable everyday setup. The Outlander’s available features leaned toward convenience, with items such as keyless entry, heated front seats, a navigation system, and a wireless charging pad appearing on higher trims. It was also a relatively efficient choice for the class, with the front-drive four-cylinder rated at 25 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined, while AWD reduced those figures only slightly. Safety was another strength, as the Outlander earned top marks from the IIHS and strong crash-test results from NHTSA.
At the same time, the 2017 Outlander was not the most polished option in its segment. The four-cylinder engine was described as underpowered, and the engine and CVT combination could sound loud and unrefined. Even so, it remained a practical, reasonably equipped SUV with a useful third row, a broad list of available features, and a value-oriented appeal that helped it find buyers despite tougher competition.

Extremely well appointed interior on the SEL trim package. Great safety features including lane departure. Although individual tastes vary, I find the exterior of this vehicle to be attractive...slightly aggressive but still refined. Definitely a good value for the price. Although some reviews say that the four cylinder engine is underwhelming, it is just fine for my needs given that I am a rather conservative driver. In summary, I really like this vehicle.

At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report first, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any listing that looks especially appealing on price. Focus on condition details that matter most in a used SUV: signs of prior bodywork, uneven wear, and whether the cabin and features still match the seller’s description.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find value if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 271 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.64% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,680, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander's resale value?
The current average of $9,680 sits slightly below last year's $11,081.
That price drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. If you plan to sell later, the current pricing trend means your future resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle is documented. A clean history and strong maintenance record should matter more when you eventually list it, especially if you want to stand out in a value-focused segment.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.64% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $8,984, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,680 average.
- It gained meaningful updates that made it more competitive.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $10,925, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $9,680 average.
- It leans harder into newer tech and driver-assistance features.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the best primary path if you want a balanced mix of price, practicality, and available features. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2016 is the better value play; if you care more about newer tech, the 2018 is worth the extra money.
