Summary
With 705 currently listed for sale and an average price of $38,231, 33.3% of 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4.9 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out because it sits in a generation that Mercedes used to showcase its newest technology and engineering. The W222 series brought a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, and Mercedes said the car was the first in the world to exclusively feature LEDs over traditional bulbs, with 500 light units throughout the interior and exterior. It also introduced “magic body control,” which used an advanced road-scanning system to detect potholes and imperfections in advance and adapt the suspension to them, along with a surround-view camera system that integrated multi-modal radar and ultrasonic sensors for smoother adaptive cruise control and lane centering.
For 2017, the W222 received a facelift and tech update, and the cabin remained one of its biggest strengths. Mercedes’ MBUX digital interface and infotainment system featured on two giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel, while many physical controls were retained. The car also offered selectable ambient lighting, and many versions were available with luxury and convenience features such as rear executive seating packages, sport packages, AMG appearance packages, air purifiers, active parking assist, massaging seats, and Burmester surround-sound audio. Buyers looking at this model year get the appeal of a deeply engineered flagship with a very strong reliability record for the generation, though it is still expensive to maintain and can be costly to repair if something goes wrong.

The car has every option I was looking for even the omission of HUD. I think at its original price point it is a great value. The car has a color that I have yet to figure out but other than that Im totally satisfied with my purchase. I had a Porsche Panamera 4S but Im getting older and more mature plus everyone should own an S Class once in life.

How much does the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $38,243 |
| Year-Round Low | $38,243 |
| Year-Round High | $40,745 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $40,730 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.11% |
Prices have softened 6.11% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 702 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 4.9/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its elegant design, driving experience, performance, safety, and comfort, and many describe it as luxurious and dependable. That makes it especially appealing if you want a high-end flagship with a polished cabin and a strong reputation for refinement. With 33.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also highlights it as a dependable choice, with language that points to a trouble-free and long-term ownership experience for many drivers. That said, this is still a complex luxury car, so your used-buying risk is less about basic durability and more about whether the specific example has been maintained properly. For you, the key is to focus on service history and condition so you can reduce the chance of expensive surprises later.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and ownership patterns before you get too far into the process. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a car with advanced electronics and luxury features that can be costly to sort out after the sale. Focus your attention on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the car has been maintained consistently.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 702 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.11% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $38,243, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $38,243 sits slightly below last year's $40,730.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy with less risk of immediate overpaying. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on how well the car is presented and maintained. Clean history, strong condition, and documented care matter more when the broader market has softened.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.11% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want this generation’s flagship comfort, strong owner satisfaction, and a market that has eased from last year, the 2017 is a sensible primary target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also use the softer pricing to compare carefully against nearby years and choose the cleanest, best-documented example rather than chasing the cheapest badge alone.
