The expert road test also describes it as a well-rounded sedan that does many things right, and the ownership notes mention that it can be expensive to maintain. If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is that repair and upkeep costs can add up, so a clean service history matters.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?

At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had any prior damage or incomplete service records. Pay close attention to signs of uneven wear, electrical quirks, and any evidence of deferred maintenance, since luxury-car upkeep can be costly if the previous owner cut corners. A careful test drive should also focus on ride quality, braking feel, and whether all comfort and tech features work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin emphasizes premium materials, a high-end design, and a strong luxury feel, while the standard setup includes a 7-inch central screen and basic connectivity. Higher equipment levels add a larger screen, navigation, and more advanced convenience features, so base cars are the ones most likely to feel light on tech.
• Powertrain: The main setup is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 7-speed automatic and rear- or all-wheel drive. The expert notes say the car is quick enough for everyday use and especially enjoyable on curvy roads, but not as satisfying as the older V6 setup.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can help counter crosswinds, and an attention monitor. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus.
• Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 7-inch central screen with Bluetooth, HD Radio, and two USB ports. An 8.4-inch screen is tied to the Premium 3 package and adds navigation, map updates, SiriusXM traffic and weather data, voice recognition, and an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert test drive recorded a calculated 23 mpg over 620 miles, and the EPA rates the rear-wheel-drive model at 34 highway mpg while the all-wheel-drive version is rated at 24 city and 31 highway.

Which 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class trim should I buy?

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is offered in 1 trim level: C300.

Here's the short version:

The C300 is the trim to focus on because it’s the core model and the one most dealers stock. It gives you the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, the balanced chassis, and the luxury feel that define this C-Class, while still leaving room to add desirable options if you want more tech or convenience. If you want the best value, this is the trim to target first, then shop carefully for the right equipment package.

The safety package is strong even at the standard level, with forward-collision alert and auto-braking, Pre-Safe, and rear side thorax-level airbags included.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,886 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.21% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 55.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,254, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class's resale value?

The current average of $17,640 sits slightly below last year's $18,610.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you as a buyer now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car well maintained, you can reduce the hit from depreciation. Strong condition, clean history, and desirable equipment should matter more when it’s time to sell than simply having the badge on the trunk.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class safe?

The 2017 C-Class has a five-star rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and top ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which tested a 2016 model and gave it the Top Safety Pick+ award.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can help counter crosswinds, an attention monitor, forward-collision alert with auto-braking, and Pre-Safe, which prepares the cabin for an imminent crash. Optional driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus. The main caveat is that some of the more advanced safety tech is optional rather than standard.

Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.21% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• More of the same is the point here: the expert summary says the 2017 C-Class continues the model’s near-perfect blend of comfort, performance, price, and snob appeal.

The bottom line: The 2017 C-Class makes sense if you want the classic compact Mercedes formula and you’re shopping for value in a used luxury sedan. If you’re especially price-sensitive, this year’s softer pricing and decent deal availability make it worth a close look; if you want newer tech and a more modern cabin, a later model year may be the better path.
