Why it stands out
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class stands out as a compact luxury sedan that blends comfort, performance, price, and snob appeal in a way that has made it Mercedes-Benz’s best-selling model in the U.S. The car’s appeal is rooted in that balanced formula: it offers the kind of polished driving experience and upscale image buyers expect from a German luxury sedan, while remaining accessible enough to attract a broad audience.
For 2017, the C-Class was described as offering more of the same, which is a strength in itself when the formula is already working well. Drivers are drawn to its powerful performance, stylish design, and luxurious features, and many also appreciate its responsiveness and comfort on the road. At the same time, some owners note that maintenance costs can be high, and taller passengers may find the cabin a bit cramped.

Reviewed a 2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 S Coupe on Apr 11, 2023
The c63s is one of the best cars Ive ever driven. The steering, throttle response and brakes are all amazing. The suspension is extremely rough, even compared to cars like the F-type. However the driving experience makes the bumpy ride worth it. It has a great interior with a good sized trunk. The back seats are small, but much larger than a LC500. If youre in the market for a fast and fun car definitely pick one up. Its an amazing car with an amazing hand-built V8 that will last. Id definitely take a C63 coupe over a F-type, DB11, Hellcat, M4, M8, Gt350 and almost every car in the segment. (Below the Lc500 though) Overall a great car you should pick up if its in your budget.

The Mercedes Benz C Coupe sets itself aside from its sedan version. In fact, despite having the same nameplate, and badging, it is an entirely different car. Kudos to the sedan, no doubt, but the Coupe just epitomizes the right balance between pure luxury and pure sport. It is pleasant to find how well it does both in equal parts. Beautifully styled inside and out, it offers upgrades as standard that are options with the sedan. Drives enthusiastically, precisely, and comfortably. This model year is where the depreciation has its full effect and is quite affordable. It puts a smile on my face just by gazing at it, let alone what it does when I get behind the wheel.

User feedback also points to a car that feels powerful, comfortable, and stylish, with many drivers describing it as responsive and enjoyable to live with over time. The expert notes reinforce that this model year is built around a near-perfect blend of comfort, performance, price, and snob appeal. At the same time, used buyers should pay close attention to maintenance history and any signs of wear, since long-term ownership costs can shape the experience.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had prior damage or a long service gap. Focus on condition details that matter most in a luxury sedan: interior wear, electronics, suspension feel, and evidence of deferred maintenance. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example with the best records is usually worth the extra effort.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base setup includes a 7-inch central screen, Bluetooth, HD Radio, and two USB ports, while the available 8.4-inch screen adds navigation and map updates through the Premium 3 package. Standard safety equipment is already strong, but some driver-assistance features remain optional.
- Powertrain: The C300 uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 7-speed automatic and available rear- or 4Matic all-wheel drive. Efficiency varies by drivetrain, with the rear-wheel-drive model returning better highway mileage than the 4Matic version.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can help counter crosswinds, and an attention monitor. Blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus are optional.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 7-inch central screen, and the available 8.4-inch screen adds navigation, three years of map updates, and five years of SiriusXM traffic and weather data. The system also offers voice recognition and an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: Over 620 miles, the test vehicle averaged 23 mpg. The EPA rates the C300 4Matic at 24 mpg city and 31 highway, while rear-wheel-drive models reach 34 highway mpg.
Which 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is offered in 1 trim level: C300.
Here's the short version:
The C300 is the trim to focus on because it captures the core C-Class formula: turbocharged power, luxury feel, and strong safety equipment without forcing you into the higher-priced performance variants. It gives you the best balance of everyday usability and the upscale character that defines this model year. If you want the most complete version of the standard sedan, this is the one to shop first.
The standard safety package already includes forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, rear side thorax-level airbags, and an attention monitor, so you’re not starting from a stripped-down base.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare condition carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,996 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.10% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,377.99, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class's resale value?
The current average of $17,363 sits slightly below last year's $19,313.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit upside if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the key advantage is that the C-Class still has broad appeal as a compact luxury sedan with strong brand recognition and a premium feel. Well-kept examples should continue to attract shoppers who want comfort, performance, and status in one package.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class safe?
The 2017 C-Class has a five-star rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and top ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which tested a 2016 model and gave it the Top Safety Pick+ award.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can help keep the car on course in crosswinds, and an attention monitor that warns of drowsy driving. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus. The main caveat is that some of the most helpful driver-assistance features are not standard.
Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.10% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- More of the same—and that’s a very good thing.
The bottom line: If you want a compact luxury sedan with strong safety, upscale materials, and broad market availability, the 2017 C-Class is the right year to target. If your priority is simply the lowest possible purchase price, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than the newest badge.
