Why it stands out
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class stands out as a compact luxury sedan that blends comfort, performance, price, and snob appeal in a way that has made it Mercedes-Benz’s best-selling model in the U.S. The car’s appeal is rooted in that balanced formula: it offers the kind of polished driving experience and upscale image buyers expect from a German luxury sedan, while remaining accessible enough to attract a broad audience.
For 2017, the C-Class was described as offering more of the same, which is a strength in itself when the formula is already working well. Drivers are drawn to its powerful performance, stylish design, and luxurious features, and many also appreciate its responsiveness and comfort on the road. At the same time, some owners note that maintenance costs can be high, and taller passengers may find the cabin a bit cramped.

Reviewed a 2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 S Coupe on Apr 11, 2023
The c63s is one of the best cars Ive ever driven. The steering, throttle response and brakes are all amazing. The suspension is extremely rough, even compared to cars like the F-type. However the driving experience makes the bumpy ride worth it. It has a great interior with a good sized trunk. The back seats are small, but much larger than a LC500. If youre in the market for a fast and fun car definitely pick one up. Its an amazing car with an amazing hand-built V8 that will last. Id definitely take a C63 coupe over a F-type, DB11, Hellcat, M4, M8, Gt350 and almost every car in the segment. (Below the Lc500 though) Overall a great car you should pick up if its in your budget.

The Mercedes Benz C Coupe sets itself aside from its sedan version. In fact, despite having the same nameplate, and badging, it is an entirely different car. Kudos to the sedan, no doubt, but the Coupe just epitomizes the right balance between pure luxury and pure sport. It is pleasant to find how well it does both in equal parts. Beautifully styled inside and out, it offers upgrades as standard that are options with the sedan. Drives enthusiastically, precisely, and comfortably. This model year is where the depreciation has its full effect and is quite affordable. It puts a smile on my face just by gazing at it, let alone what it does when I get behind the wheel.

Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class a good car?
Yes — 4.5/5 is a strong user rating for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the expert score is 7.83/10. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its powerful performance, stylish design, and luxurious features, and many also appreciate its responsiveness and comfort. That lines up well with the model’s role as a compact luxury sedan that balances comfort, performance, price, and upscale appeal. For you, that means this is a strong fit if you want a polished daily driver with a premium feel rather than a purely practical commuter.
The market also looks reasonably supportive, with 32.4% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a car that feels powerful, comfortable, and luxurious, with many drivers describing it as responsive and enjoyable to live with over time.
The expert drive notes reinforce that dependable character by describing the car as quiet and calm in Comfort mode and confident on curvy roads, with a chassis that inspires confidence. Mercedes also includes standard maintenance-minded touches like brake drying in the rain and self-adjusting shock absorbers on the base version, which support everyday usability.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that maintenance and repair costs can run high, so a clean service history matters as much as the odometer reading.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
At 55.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows signs of uneven wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and any warning signs tied to prior repairs or ownership neglect. Because some owners mention a leaky fuel line, it’s smart to pay close attention to underhood and underbody condition during inspection.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base version includes Agility Control, while the Luxury version uses softer-tuned dampers and smaller 17-inch tires. The Sport package adds a more aggressive setup, and the Airmatic air suspension is the most comfort-focused option.
- Powertrain: The main engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 7-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive. The turbo four is smooth and capable, but it is not as quick as the previous V6 and does not deliver a dramatic fuel-economy advantage.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, rear side thorax-level airbags, an attention monitor, and stability control that can help manage crosswinds. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus.
- Infotainment: A 7-inch central screen is standard with Bluetooth, HD Radio, and two USB ports. The 8.4-inch screen adds navigation, map updates, and SiriusXM traffic and weather data, while voice recognition and an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot improve day-to-day usability.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert drive recorded 23 mpg over 620 miles, while EPA estimates list 24 mpg city and 31 highway for the 4Matic model and 34 highway for rear-wheel-drive versions.
Which 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is offered in 1 trim level: C300.
Here's the short version:
The C300 is the trim to focus on because it captures the core C-Class formula without pushing you into the higher-cost AMG territory. It gives you the 2.0-liter turbo four, the standard luxury feel, and the main safety and tech features that make this car appealing in the first place. If you want the best balance of price, comfort, and everyday usability, this is the one to target.
The safety package is strong even at the standard level, with forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, rear side thorax-level airbags, and an attention monitor included.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,912 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.37% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,357.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class's resale value?
The current average of $17,557 sits slightly below last year's $19,161.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means your upside may depend more on condition, mileage, and equipment than on broad market appreciation. Well-kept examples with desirable features should hold up better than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class safe?
The 2017 C-Class has a five-star rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and top ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which tested a 2016 model and gave it the Top Safety Pick+ award.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Mercedes includes forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, rear side thorax-level airbags, an attention monitor, and stability control that can help manage crosswinds. Optional safety features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus. The main caveat is that some of the more advanced driver-assistance features are optional rather than standard.
Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.37% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- More of the same is the theme for this year, and that works well because the C-Class formula already delivers comfort, performance, price, and snob appeal.
The bottom line: If you want a compact luxury sedan with strong owner satisfaction, a premium cabin, and a softer used-car price than last year, the 2017 C-Class is the better buy. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can use the current market softness to shop carefully and target the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than stretching for a newer year.
