What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?

At 56.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven panel gaps, tire wear, or warning lights. Pay close attention to cabin condition, electronics, and any signs of deferred maintenance, since luxury features can be costly to sort out after the sale. It’s also smart to confirm that any safety and convenience equipment works as intended before you commit.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The C300 is the core choice, with rear-wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive, while Luxury and Sport packages change the car’s character through softer or firmer suspension tuning and different wheel and tire setups. The base setup is the most straightforward, while the better-equipped versions add more polish and presence.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque paired with a 7-speed automatic. The lineup also includes higher-powered AMG models, and the plug-in hybrid variant is mentioned separately in the performance discussion.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can compensate for crosswinds, and an attention monitor. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus.
• Infotainment: A 7-inch central screen is standard with Bluetooth, HD Radio, and two USB ports. The available 8.4-inch screen adds navigation, map updates, and SiriusXM traffic and weather data, and the system also includes voice recognition and an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The 4Matic model is rated at 24 mpg city and 31 highway, while rear-wheel-drive models reach 34 highway. In testing, the car averaged 23 mpg over 620 miles.

Which 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class trim should I buy?

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is offered in 1 trim level: C300.

Here's the short version:

The C300: This is the trim to focus on because it’s the main version you’ll actually find on dealer lots, and it already delivers the core C-Class formula of strong turbocharged performance, a refined cabin, and a good mix of comfort and tech. If you want the best value, look for a well-equipped C300 rather than stretching for expensive options, since the model’s appeal comes from how complete it feels even before you start adding packages.

The safety package is strong across the lineup, with standard forward-collision alert with auto-braking and Pre-Safe, while blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus are available.

• Deal availability: 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,924 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.86% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,254, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class's resale value?

The current average of $17,713 sits slightly below last year's $18,618.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can work against a future seller if depreciation continues at the same pace. On the other hand, the current spread between the year-round low and high shows there is still room for well-kept examples to command stronger money. If you buy carefully and keep maintenance records, you’ll be in a better position to protect value when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class safe?

The 2017 C-Class has a five-star rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and top ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which tested a 2016 model and gave it the Top Safety Pick+ award.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes rear side thorax-level airbags, forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, an attention monitor, and stability control that can help compensate for crosswinds and apply individual brakes to keep the car on course. Optional safety features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus. The main caveat is that some of the more advanced driver-assistance features are optional rather than standard.

Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.86% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• More of the same is presented as a strength for this year, with the C-Class continuing to deliver the familiar blend of comfort, performance, price, and prestige.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, satisfaction, and availability, the 2017 C-Class is the year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby model years, but the 2017 stands out because it combines a softer market, solid inventory, and strong owner approval without changing the formula in a way that weakens the car’s appeal.
