Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata has long been celebrated for its impressive handling and sporty demeanor, making it a compelling choice for driving enthusiasts. One of its most notable features is the availability of the RF (Retractable Fastback) version, a unique design that combines style with functionality, allowing drivers to enjoy the sun with the ease of a hardtop. Weighing just over 2,300 pounds, the Miata’s 155-horsepower engine delivers spirited performance while maintaining impressive fuel efficiency—especially with the automatic transmission variant. Owners praise its excellent cornering capabilities and refined interior, although a few have noted the constraints in cargo space and the absence of certain modern features like a backup camera. With a solid owner rating of 4.62 / 5 stars and a comfortable interior, the 2017 MX-5 Miata beautifully balances the desire for a purist driving experience with day-to-day usability.

The Mx5 is a fun little car to drive. Its very small, light, and nimble. The steering is very tight and responsive, as is the throttle and transmission. Its not a car for someone who wants a lot of room. If youre over 6 , or have a large frame, I would advise a test fit, but at 510 -165lbs theres enough room for me to be comfortable, even on 4 hr + road trips. Its rated at 155 bhp, so its not going to keep up with a porsche boxster or a vette,, but it definitely isnt gutless. The sport mode is a little jumpy dor my taste as a daily drive, but I do use it in winding hills where Im not going to be needing 5th and 6th gear, as it rarely shifts above 4th in sport. The paddle shifters and manual mode console shift on the auto trans is quick to respond when you tell it to shift. Theres little to no lag. The gearing is low enough that it feels punchy and quick on takeoff, but the higher gears are very well suited to highway driving at 75-80mph setting in around 200-2200 rpm. He suspension os stiff enoughbto keep the car flat during spirited cornering, but soft enough to keep the ride from being bumpy. It reminds me of a racing gocart, but with a much nicer ride. Theres not a lot in the way of storage space with only 1 real compartment in the cabin thats situated between the seats on the back wall. There are 2 other small compartments, but you have to pull the seats forward to access them so they arent usable for anything you need without parking the car. The trunk is about what youd expect for a small 2 seater. Theres enough room for a duffel or overnight bag, if you want to take a weekend trip. The seats are comfortable, but not luxurious. I feel they could use a little more padding in the bottom and backrest, but it isnt hard by any stretch of the imagination. The engine is audible and the exhaust sporty sounding (for a 4 cyl) at higher rpms but not so much as to be annoying. You dont hear the engine at highway cruising speeds or when just easing around town, but when you throttle it, it says hello. On the highway all youll hear is the wind and your radio, as it should be. The little 2.0l 4 cylinder GDI engine with VVT is is extremely economical, coming in at nearly 40mpg on my highway trips, and I dont drive like your mother. It usually show me around 25-28mpg in town, too. The 11.9 gal fuel tank is cheap to fill and lasts a good bit longer than Ive been accustomed to in the past. All around I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars, only subtracting that .5 because i think it could stand a little more leg room and the cup holder situation is a bit odd.

Love this car. 2017 with 20k miles. Buying used saved me a lot of money. So much fun to drive! I love the dynamics of a manual transmission. I’m 6’1” and it fits me like a glove. Soul red with black top and tan leather is a beautiful color combination . I did my homework and the price I got at the dealer was well below market. Only one thing I miss is a back up camera, but it has rear cross traffic alert which is more important in my opinion. I also have an SUV so no back seat or significant storage is not a big concern.
