What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?

At 53.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the car drives straight and feels composed, since those details matter more when you’re shopping from a mixed-condition used inventory. If you’re comparing multiple listings, put the cleanest example with the best maintenance history near the top of your list.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Sport includes daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring, dynamic stability control, traction control, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and the Mazda Connect infotainment system. The Touring adds 18-inch wheels, automatic on/off headlights, heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, leather-wrapped touch points, rain-sensing wipers, Smart City Brake Support, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The Grand Touring adds the more powerful 2.5-liter engine, LED fog lights, a rear spoiler, a moonroof, leather-trimmed sport seats, Bose audio, SiriusXM, and an active driving display.
• Powertrain: The car uses either a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 155 hp or a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 184 hp. Both engines are paired with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, and the stronger engine is reserved for the Grand Touring.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes multiple airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, hill launch assist, dynamic stability control, traction control, and a reversing camera. Touring and Grand Touring trims add advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support.
• Infotainment: The system uses a 7-inch full-color touchscreen, Mazda Connect, Bluetooth handsfree phone and audio streaming, SiriusXM satellite radio, voice command, AM/FM/HD Radio, SMS text-message audio delivery and reply, two USB ports, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are not available.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 27 mpg city and 37 highway with the manual, or 28/37 with the automatic. The stronger engine is rated at 25/34 with the manual or 27/36 with the automatic, and an available package can bring the automatic back up to 28/37.

Which 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want a well-equipped car with the core Mazda experience. It gives you the essentials, the standard infotainment system, and the same basic driving character as the pricier trims.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the comfort and safety upgrades that make daily use easier, including heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, Smart City Brake Support, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the strongest engine and the most upscale feel, plus the Bose audio system, moonroof, and active driving display. It’s the right pick if you care most about features and a more premium cabin.

The safety-package upgrades are concentrated in the Touring and Grand Touring trims, so those are the trims to target if driver assistance matters to you.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 730 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 5.70% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 53.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,910, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $13,288 sits slightly above last year's $12,571.

That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. The year-round range also shows that pricing has stayed fairly tight, so a well-kept example should remain relatively easy to position competitively. If you buy carefully and keep the car in good condition, you should have a reasonable path to preserving value.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?

The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 has not been fully rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It has so far received five-star ratings in side crash testing and four-star ratings in rollover testing.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes multiple airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, hill launch assist, dynamic stability control, traction control, and a reversing camera. Touring and Grand Touring trims add advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support, Mazda's version of automatic emergency braking.

The main caveat is that the car has not yet been fully tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, so you should pay close attention to trim level and equipment when comparing used examples.

Should I buy a 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 5.70% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 update added G-Vectoring Control and refreshed styling, which sharpened the car’s appeal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $12,202, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,288 average.
• It emphasizes driving feel and value, but the cabin is small even for a compact car.

The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced choice, the 2017 is the stronger pick because it combines the refresh, strong owner satisfaction, and a still-reasonable used price. If your priority is saving money first, the 2016 can make sense, especially if you find a clean example and don’t mind giving up some of the 2017’s added appeal.
