CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mazda MAZDA3
overall

Summary
With 611 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,445.00, 27.7% of 2017 Mazda MAZDA3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out as a compact car that blends style, value, and driving enjoyment. For 2017, it received its first real update since this generation debuted back in 2013, with design changes inside and out and new G-Vectoring Control that made an already strong package even more appealing and fun to drive. Mazda’s reputation for stylish cars with beautiful interiors comes through here as well, and the Mazda3 is presented as a car that looks and feels more expensive than its price suggests.
It also has broad appeal because it offers plenty of features even in the base version, along with well-priced options that let buyers tailor the car to their needs and budget. Owner feedback reinforces the Mazda3’s sporty feel, responsive acceleration, fuel efficiency, stylish interior, and user-friendly technology. At the same time, some drivers wanted more features and systems to better match competitors, which suggests the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 is especially attractive to buyers who value driving character and design over maximum equipment.

The vehicle was priced well with all the features anyone could ever need. The interior seems to be better quality than others in its class over all a good made vehicle.

When my Honda died some 10 years ago or so, I somehow stumbled upon the Mazda3 (I think it was the Car & Driver reviews), and bought one. That car is the most fabulous car in its price range that I have ever driven. I adored it. I bought a 2008 sGT, and drove it with nothing but the greatest pleasure until it gave up its life for me about a month ago. There will be no coming back from this injury, but I promise you, I am currently looking for this car, and ONLY this car, for my next car, and however many next cars I have after this one. Ne plus ultra.

This car certainly has a LOT of zip, and thats not even using the Sport Mode! Plus, it gets great mpg and has a good shot of making it to 250k miles.

Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Yes — 4.83/5 from owners, and it earns an 8.5/10 expert rating.
The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its sporty feel, responsive acceleration, fuel efficiency, stylish interior, and user-friendly technology. That lines up with the car’s broader appeal as a compact model that blends style, value, and driving enjoyment, while still offering plenty of features even in the base version. For you, that means the Mazda3 makes the most sense if you want a compact car that feels more engaging and upscale than its price suggests.
The market also shows 29.2% good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with repeated praise for its sporty character, responsive acceleration, fuel efficiency, stylish interior, and user-friendly technology. The expert drive notes also emphasize a composed, secure feel on the road, with solid steering, minimal noise, and confident behavior in hard braking and wet conditions. Coverage includes a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, and 3 years/36,000 miles of roadside assistance.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by hard use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?
At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had prior bodywork or shows uneven wear. Focus on condition details that matter most in a compact car: interior wear, tire condition, brake feel, and whether the electronics and driver aids work as expected. If you’re comparing multiple listings, give extra weight to cars with clean records and consistent maintenance.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Sport includes daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring, dynamic stability control, traction control, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and the Mazda Connect infotainment system. Touring adds automatic on/off headlights, heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar, heated front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob, leatherette sport seats, rain-sensing windshield wipers, Smart City Brake Support, and advanced blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque in the base setup, or a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft in the Grand Touring. Fuel economy ranges from 27 mpg city/37 highway with the manual base engine to 28/37 with the automatic, while the larger engine returns 25/34 with the manual or 27/36 with the automatic.
- Safety package: Smart City Brake Support, Mazda’s version of automatic emergency braking, appears on Touring and Grand Touring trims. Those trims also add advanced blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the base trim does not get that full suite.
- Infotainment: The system uses a 7-inch touchscreen, includes Bluetooth handsfree phone and audio streaming, Mazda Connect, SiriusXM with a 4-month trial, voice command, AM/FM/HD Radio, SMS text-message audio delivery and reply, two USB ports, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are not available.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 27 mpg city/37 highway with the manual or 28/37 with the automatic. The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 25/34 with the manual or 27/36 with the automatic, and the i-ELOOP package can improve the automatic version to 28/37.
Which 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: Sport is the value play, but it lacks the added comfort and driver-assistance features found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: Touring is the best balance for most shoppers because it adds heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, Smart City Brake Support, and advanced blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Premium/top trim: Grand Touring is the pick if you want the stronger 2.5-liter engine, perforated leather-trimmed sport seats, a power sliding-glass moonroof, Bose audio, SiriusXM, and a full-color active driving display.
The Touring trim is the one that brings the key safety-package upgrades, so it’s the most compelling choice if you want the best mix of value and protection.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?
Act selectively, because this is still a seller’s market, but there are enough listings to find a good one if you move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 603 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.66% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 55.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,908.89, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $13,421 sits slightly above last year's $12,947.
That price movement suggests the market has held up well, which is a positive sign if you’re thinking about future resale. A model year that has appreciated modestly can be easier to move later, especially when demand stays steady and shoppers continue to value the car’s style and driving feel. The relatively small gap between the current average and the year-ago figure also points to a stable pricing environment rather than a sharp drop.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
It has received five-star ratings in side crash testing and four-star ratings in rollover testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include multiple airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, hill launch assist, dynamic stability control, traction control, and a reversing camera. Touring and Grand Touring trims add advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support, Mazda's version of automatic emergency braking. The car had not yet been fully rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety at the time of the evaluation, though the prior model year had strong results.
Should I buy a 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.66% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda’s 2017 update added design changes and G-Vectoring Control, which sharpened the car’s appeal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,109, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,421 average.
- It feels engaging without turning harsh or tiring.
The bottom line: choose the 2017 if you want the stronger update, the broader feature set, and the same core driving character that makes the Mazda3 appealing. If your priority is saving money and you can live with fewer updates, the 2016 is the better value-focused alternative.
