CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mazda CX-9

Summary
With 360 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,323.00, 32.5% of 2017 Mazda CX-9s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mazda CX-9 5 / 5 stars.
65.0% of 2017 CX-9 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda CX-9 stands out for putting a sporty driving feel ahead of the usual three-row SUV formula. Mazda’s approach gives it a more engaging character than many rivals, while the cabin aims for a premium feel and the styling leans upscale rather than utilitarian. For buyers who care more about design and driving enjoyment than maximum interior and cargo space, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
There are tradeoffs, though. The CX-9 is described as smaller inside than class leaders, and its ride borders on stiff. Its technology can also be unintuitive, especially Mazda’s knob-and-button-based infotainment system. Even so, the 2017 Mazda CX-9 remains distinctive because it blends style, a premium interior, and a fun-to-drive personality in a segment that often prioritizes space above all else.

This was our Goldilocks car. Not too big. Not too small. Has all the features we needed and cared about. The third row option is super helpful given we don’t need it all the time, but it’s great to have for trips or when we load up all the kids and dogs and all our belongings to go visit family. It’s ZIPPY. Great acceleration and a firm but not harsh drive. Very responsive and honestly I’m a little obsessed. The safety ratings really sold me. That was the most important thing to me and after watching a lot of crash test footage I was sold. I honestly don’t feel like my car is missing anything. I didn’t care to have lane assist or anything like that so the touring was great for us with blind spot detection and back up camera. LOVE THE SEAT WARMERS. I’m practically a lizard. Give me the heat. Lol I feel like it compares well to the Highlander. About the same situation in the third row (although I felt like I had slightly more room in the cx-9) and a better trunk situation with the hidden compartment and cubbies in the side. Overall, I love it. A whole lot. As a mom of three with kids out of anchored car seats and one full back booster and one seat only booster and a huge 8 year old….it’s perfect. (My neighbor has the same car with two littles in car seats and she absolutely loves her cx-9 as well.) great family option while still feeling fun.

Everything I’m looking for! The European sleek design inside and out, without the hefty price tag that normally comes with a luxury vehicle.

Is the 2017 Mazda CX-9 a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating suggests strong owner satisfaction.
The 2017 Mazda CX-9 stands out for putting a sporty driving feel ahead of the usual three-row SUV formula. Its cabin aims for a premium feel, and the styling leans upscale rather than utilitarian. For you, that means this model makes the most sense if you care more about design and driving enjoyment than maximum interior and cargo space.
27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-9 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2017 Mazda CX-9 is described as distinctive because it blends style, a premium interior, and a fun-to-drive personality. It also has tradeoffs: the cabin is smaller than class leaders, the ride borders on stiff, and the infotainment system can be unintuitive. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is less about outright appeal and more about whether you can live with its space and usability compromises.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda CX-9?
At 63.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. Put inspection priority on bodywork, alignment, and signs of uneven wear, since those can reveal past incidents that matter more than cosmetic fixes. Focus on overall condition and maintenance evidence, especially if you want the premium-feel experience this model is known for.

What is the 2017 Mazda CX-9's resale value?
The current average of $15,325 sits slightly below last year's $16,390.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can make the CX-9 easier to buy now but may also limit short-term appreciation if you plan to resell soon. For you as a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition so you can protect value when it’s time to list it. Models that stay desirable tend to be the ones with broad appeal and clean histories.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Mazda CX-9 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.50% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,468, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $15,325 average.
- It offers a more-for-less value proposition with a near-luxury feel.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the better secondary path because it undercuts the 2017’s average price while still delivering the CX-9’s upscale character.
