CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 1,740 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,086.00, 31.6% of 2017 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mazda CX-5 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
60.9% of 2017 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 stands out by aiming for a sporty, upscale personality rather than trying to appeal to everyone in the compact crossover market. In a segment with many different personalities, it is presented as the kind of SUV for a buyer who wants something more engaging than the usual commuter choice and a little nicer than the average crossover, without needing to move into a luxury brand.
What makes it especially distinctive is that it is described as fun to drive and uniquely upscale for its class. That combination gives it a clear identity among compact SUVs that are often more practical than exciting. It also fits buyers who want more space than a sedan but still care about driving enjoyment.
At the same time, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 is not framed as the most spacious or most powerful option, and some owners wished for more cargo space and more power. Even so, its stylish design, smooth ride, comfortable handling, fuel economy, and strong reliability help explain why it appeals to shoppers looking for a crossover with a more polished feel.

I bought this car to replace the same model that I lost in an accident. It was a year older and a lower trim. This trim is the premium trim and it’s nice. It has a heads up display full of seats. The steering wheel warms up memory seats and it runs like a dream. I really enjoy driving this car..

I bought the sport, base model, and for being a base model the features are pretty good. The only thing I wish I had, was rear vents for the AC.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,083 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,161.28 |
| Year-Round High | $16,605.34 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,604 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.14% |
Prices have softened 3.14% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,813 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $15,161.28, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — 4.7/5 is a strong owner rating for the 2017 Mazda CX-5, and the expert rating is 7.33/10. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners repeatedly praise its stylish design, smooth ride, comfortable handling, and fuel economy. That lines up well with the CX-5’s role as a compact crossover for you if you want something more engaging than a typical commuter SUV and a little more upscale than the average mainstream choice.
The market also shows 31.4% good or great deals, which suggests you can still find value if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to excellent reliability, and it also describes the CX-5 as a vehicle many drivers trust for long trips and everyday use. The expert driving impression reinforces that dependable character by emphasizing its composed road manners and strong all-around execution.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the core mechanical package and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda CX-5?
At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the vehicle’s equipment and safety systems work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport trim is the most basic version, while Touring adds leatherette seating, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rear USB ports, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, rear climate vents, and Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry. Grand Touring adds 19-inch wheels, adaptive headlights, LED fog lights, heated side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a power moonroof, a power rear liftgate, full leather seating, a power driver’s seat with lumbar support, navigation, auto-dimming mirrors, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a Bose premium stereo.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, tire pressure monitoring, and Smart City Brake Support. Touring adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while Grand Touring adds adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Those higher-level driver aids are not standard on the lower trims.
- Infotainment: The CX-5 uses a 7-inch MazdaConnect screen controlled by a rotary dial, with touch capability when parked. It includes Bluetooth hands-free calling and dual USB ports, but it does not offer Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD model returns 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 combined, while AWD versions return 23 city, 30 highway, and 26 combined.
Which 2017 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the value play if you want the CX-5’s core strengths at the lowest entry price. You still get 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a reversing camera, keyless entry, push-button start, dual USB ports, MazdaConnect, and Bluetooth, so it covers the essentials well.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the comfort and convenience upgrades that make daily use feel more premium. You get leatherette seating, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rear USB ports, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, rear climate vents, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry, plus blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the most upscale version and are willing to pay for it. It adds 19-inch wheels, adaptive headlights, LED fog lights, heated side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a power moonroof, a power rear liftgate, full leather seating, a power driver’s seat with lumbar support, navigation, auto-dimming mirrors, SiriusXM, and a Bose premium stereo.
The safety package steps up meaningfully as you move from Sport to Touring and Grand Touring, so trim choice has a real impact on equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.
- Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,813 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.14% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,161.28, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $16,083 sits slightly below last year's $16,604.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim appeal rather than assuming prices will rebound quickly.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 has been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety when equipped with automatic emergency braking.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, tire pressure monitoring, and Smart City Brake Support. Touring adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while Grand Touring adds adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. That means the strongest safety setup is tied to the higher trims.
Should I buy a 2017 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.14% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 CX-5 is praised for its upscale feel, strong reliability, and engaging driving character.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,732, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $16,083 average.
- It moves the CX-5 closer to premium-brand territory with a more polished, rewarding driving experience.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2017 is the smarter buy because pricing has softened and the model still delivers the CX-5’s core strengths. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer-year alternative, the 2018 is the path to consider.
