CarGurus Analysis: 2017 MINI Countryman

Summary
With 313 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,075, 36.7% of 2017 MINI Countryman listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 MINI Countryman 4.75 / 5 stars.
65.8% of 2017 MINI Countryman listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 MINI Countryman stands out because it blends MINI’s retro personality with a more practical shape than the brand’s smaller cars. For this generation, the Countryman looked very similar to the first, even though it grew by a substantial 7.5 inches in length. The design changes were subtle but noticeable, including smaller headlights, a different front roof-pillar trim treatment, and a rear liftgate that incorporated the license plate cutout instead of placing it in the bumper. Inside, it kept the round central display and gauge, along with chunky toggle switches that preserved some of MINI’s analog charm.
What makes the 2017 model especially appealing is that it offered a useful mix of space, standard equipment, and driving character. The base engine was a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder with 134 hp, paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, and AWD was standard. The Cooper S brought a 189-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, with front-wheel drive standard and AWD available. Standard features on the base Cooper included 17-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, synthetic leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 6.5-inch infotainment display, while the Cooper S added 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, and heated front sport seats. Buyers could also choose from options such as a hands-free power liftgate, adaptive suspension dampers, a larger infotainment touchscreen, navigation, premium audio, a wireless charging pad, and a sporty John Cooper Works appearance package.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Countryman’s sporty personality came with a stiff ride, and the base engines were described as weak. Cargo capacity was also smaller than rivals, so this is not the most practical choice in the class. Even so, the 2017 MINI Countryman remains distinctive for shoppers who want a compact SUV with personality, available all-wheel drive, and a cabin that still feels unmistakably MINI.

The 2017+ Countryman is far and away improved over previous models. The space is phenomenal, given the overall size of the car. The interior is spacious and airy with the double sun roofs, refined but still fun. Amenities like the ambient lighting and LED ring around the infotainment system set the MINI apart. It drives like its on rails and the S model is plenty quick and responsive. I love this car!!!

| Year-Round Low | $12,825 |
| Year-Round High | $13,816 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,674 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.32% |

There are 313 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2017 MINI Countryman a good car?
Yes — 4.8/5 is a strong user rating for this model year, and the 2017 MINI Countryman stands out for blending MINI’s retro personality with a more practical shape than the brand’s smaller cars. It offers a useful mix of space, standard equipment, and driving character, while still keeping the round central display, gauge, and chunky toggle switches that give the cabin its distinctive feel. If you want a compact SUV with personality and available all-wheel drive, this model year fits that brief well. 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 MINI Countryman reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2017 MINI Countryman’s appeal comes from its distinctive character, practical shape, and standard equipment rather than from a reputation for being the most conventional choice in the class. Its base engine is described as weak, and the ride is stiff, so you should expect a vehicle that prioritizes personality over comfort-first tuning. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is ending up with a car that has been driven hard or maintained inconsistently, so condition matters a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 MINI Countryman?
At 65.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, with extra attention to suspension feel, interior wear, and signs that the car’s sporty personality has come at the expense of careful maintenance. Because this model is valued for its character and equipment, you want to focus on overall condition rather than just mileage.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 MINI Countryman?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 313 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.32% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,825, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 MINI Countryman's resale value?
The current average of $13,083 sits slightly below last year's $13,674.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, which can put some pressure on future resale if you sell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you may be better positioned to protect value later. The model’s distinctive appeal can help it stand out, but resale will still depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car was maintained.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 MINI Countryman or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.32% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want the Countryman’s distinctive style, practical shape, and a market that currently offers some pricing relief. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may still be worth comparing, but the 2017 is a solid choice when you find a clean example with a strong history and a fair asking price.
