CarGurus Analysis: 2017 MINI Cooper

Summary
With 374 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,545, 33.4% of 2017 MINI Coopers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 MINI Cooper 4.75 / 5 stars.
62.8% of 2017 Cooper models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 MINI Cooper stands out because it blends the brand’s trademark personality with a genuinely playful driving character. MINI’s own history and motorsport roots help explain why the Cooper has such a strong reputation for sharp handling, short wheelbase, and low weight, and the car’s appeal is still tied to that go-kart-like feel. It also carries the brand’s British style and retro charm, which remain a big part of its identity.
For 2017, the third-generation Cooper uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that makes 134 horsepower. The Cooper S is the quicker choice in this generation, but the standard car is still described as pretty fun to drive, especially in the convertible. The cabin’s 8-inch infotainment touchscreen adds a distinctive touch with its light ring that changes colors with drive modes, and the car offers Apple CarPlay and navigation, though both were added-cost options. Android Auto is not available.
There are tradeoffs, and they matter if you want a MINI for everyday use. The back seat is still truly tiny, cargo space is restricted, and the Convertible is especially limited in that regard. Reliability is another concern, since this generation is described as having worse reliability records in its earlier years, so a careful inspection is important. Even so, the 2017 MINI Cooper remains appealing for buyers who want a small car with character, strong style, and a driving experience that feels more engaging than most of its class.

Nice little run around car with plenty of zip and fun to drive. I’ve only had it a week but everything seems fine and in good shape. 38 mpg on the hwy at 70 -75 mph. Love it so far!

This car is outstanding. Most fun I have ever had driving. So responsive, tight ride...almost drives itself. Like a racehorse who just wants to run. Sporty, expensive exterior, sleek interior. great sound system. Recommend without reservation. Compared to my 2012 Mini- there is no comparison. Rides and feels like a much more expensive car.

A well put together little car. Fantastic handling, it grips the road like it owes it money. Economical to run around in and when it’s time to play, the sport mode stiffens up the suspension, steering and throttle response for a good supply of adrenaline! A mini is one of the best inventions I’ve come across.

The owner feedback also emphasizes dependable day-to-day enjoyment, with drivers highlighting the car’s fun character and fuel efficiency over time. That said, some owners mention minor cosmetic issues, so you should still pay close attention to condition on any used example. For long-term ownership, the main risk is buying a car that has been neglected or poorly maintained rather than one that simply has high mileage.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 MINI Cooper?
At 61.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with accident records. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially for bodywork, panel alignment, and signs of cosmetic wear. Because some owners mention minor cosmetic issues, condition should matter just as much as mileage and price when you compare listings.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 MINI Cooper?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 372 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.60% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,414.69, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 MINI Cooper's resale value?
The current average of $12,465 sits slightly below last year's $14,100.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the car in strong condition so you preserve as much value as possible. A well-kept example should still attract interest because this model has a clear enthusiast appeal.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 MINI Cooper or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.60% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 MINI Cooper makes the most sense if you want the model’s signature style and playful driving feel at a price that has moved down from last year. If you’re more price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-documented example rather than chasing the lowest sticker price alone.
