CarGurus Analysis: 2017 MINI Cooper

Summary
With 373 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,674.00, 34.9% of 2017 MINI Coopers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 MINI Cooper 4.75 / 5 stars.
62.7% of 2017 MINI Cooper models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 MINI Cooper stands out because it blends premium-feeling style with the playful character that has long defined the nameplate. It is still a small car, but it is also a fun one, with go-kart-like handling and the brand’s trademark British style. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want something more distinctive than an ordinary commuter car, especially if they value sharp responses and a lively driving feel.
For 2017, the standard engine is a turbo 1.5-liter three-cylinder that makes 134 horsepower. The Cooper S is the quicker choice, with 189 horsepower, and MINI also offered serious John Cooper Works versions with up to 302 turbocharged horsepower. The car’s cabin adds to its personality with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen surrounded by a light ring that changes colors with drive modes, and it offers Apple CarPlay, navigation, and other features, though those were added-cost options. Android Auto is not available at all.
Practicality is the main tradeoff. The third-generation MINI Cooper is larger than the second-generation model, and it offers a four-door variant, but the back seats are still tight in both body styles. Cargo space is also restricted, especially in the Convertible. Even so, for shoppers who want a compact car with style, strong personality, and a genuinely entertaining drive, the 2017 MINI Cooper has a clear appeal.

Nice little run around car with plenty of zip and fun to drive. I’ve only had it a week but everything seems fine and in good shape. 38 mpg on the hwy at 70 -75 mph. Love it so far!

Great car, good on gas mileage , fun to drive

This car is outstanding. Most fun I have ever had driving. So responsive, tight ride...almost drives itself. Like a racehorse who just wants to run. Sporty, expensive exterior, sleek interior. great sound system. Recommend without reservation. Compared to my 2012 Mini- there is no comparison. Rides and feels like a much more expensive car.

A well put together little car. Fantastic handling, it grips the road like it owes it money. Economical to run around in and when it’s time to play, the sport mode stiffens up the suspension, steering and throttle response for a good supply of adrenaline! A mini is one of the best inventions I’ve come across.

| Year-Round Low | $12,411.70 |
| Year-Round High | $14,068.58 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,047 |

If you find a listing below $12,411.70, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 MINI Cooper a good car?
Yes — the 4.75/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise the fun driving experience, sporty handling, quick responsiveness, and unique styling, while also noting fuel efficiency as a plus.
That lines up well with the overview: you’re looking at a small car that prioritizes personality and sharp responses over pure practicality. If you want something distinctive rather than an ordinary commuter car, this model year fits that use case especially well.
With 24.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively without feeling rushed.
Is the 2017 MINI Cooper reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience for many drivers, with praise centered on fun driving, sporty handling, and fuel efficiency. That said, some owners mention minor cosmetic issues, so the best used examples are likely the ones that have been cared for consistently.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the car’s personality and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t accumulated avoidable wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 MINI Cooper?
At 63.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with past damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive.
Focus your condition check on cosmetic wear, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s features and equipment work as expected. Because this model is bought as much for character as for utility, a clean, well-kept example is usually the better value.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 MINI Cooper?

What is the 2017 MINI Cooper's resale value?
The current average of $12,547 sits slightly below last year's $14,047.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable level today, but it also means future resale will depend heavily on how well the car is maintained and how clean its history is. If you buy a well-kept example now, you may be better positioned to preserve value later than if you choose the cheapest available listing.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 MINI Cooper or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 24.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.68% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the MINI Cooper’s distinctive style, playful handling, and strong owner approval, the 2017 is a solid primary choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also use the softer market to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than chasing the lowest sticker price.
