CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Lexus RX
overall

Summary
With 1,248 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,173.00, 35.4% of 2017 Lexus RXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Lexus RX 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
58.1% of 2017 RX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Lexus RX stands out as a well-rounded luxury crossover that adds meaningful equipment without losing the comfort that defines the model. For this year, full F Sport availability expands across the RX lineup, and the Safety System + Package becomes standard, adding value to an already appealing package. It also gains rain-sensing wipers and auto-braking for the parking-assist system, details that make the RX feel more complete and easier to live with.
What continues to make the 2017 RX attractive is its premium interior materials and great ride quality. Those strengths help it deliver the smooth, upscale experience many buyers want from a Lexus. At the same time, it is not the most practical choice if cargo room is a priority, and its technology is described as unintuitive, so shoppers who value simplicity and space may want to weigh those tradeoffs carefully.

I recently purchased a 2017 Lexus RX 350 for my wife to replace an older car. She is thrilled with every facet of it. Were both learning all the technological innovations and enjoying the comforts, ease of driving, safety features and sheer joy of finally owning a Lexus. Luxury at an affordable price!

Driving this car is comfortable. It has all the amenities that I was looking for. The heated steering wheel, heated and cooled seats plus the power mirrors which I didn’t know it had! I bought a CPO with. 18,418 miles on it and the warranty it comes with is awesome ! I definitely think it is a good value.

With 1,304 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions. If you find a listing below $23,234.15, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Lexus RX a good car?
Yes — the 4.62/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.17/10. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, luxury features, and value for money. The feedback also points to a comfortable cabin and a sense that the RX delivers a dependable, long-term ownership experience.
The trade-offs are familiar: the technology can feel unintuitive, and some owners wish the interior materials were even better for the class. The overview also frames it as a comfort-first luxury crossover, so it makes the most sense if you value refinement over maximum practicality or sporty character.
With 29.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Lexus RX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback emphasizes that the RX feels reliable, dependable, and well suited to buyers who want a vehicle they can count on over time. The expert notes also reinforce that impression by pointing to Lexus’ reliability ratings and resale value as part of the model’s appeal.
The cost-effectiveness commentary suggests the RX remains a strong total package even when options raise the price. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic durability and more about choosing a well-kept example with the right equipment and condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Lexus RX?
At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence that the vehicle’s luxury features or driver-assistance systems were repaired after a collision.
Pay extra attention to how the cabin, electronics, and ride quality feel in real use, since those are central to the RX’s appeal. If the technology feels clumsy or the vehicle shows signs of neglect, that can matter more here than on a simpler used crossover.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base form is less compelling than the F Sport, which adds adaptive suspension, sport seats, 20-inch wheels, a unique gauge cluster, steering wheel, shifter, aluminum trim, sporty exterior trim, and ambient lighting. The F Sport is the standout value if you want the most complete driving experience.
- Powertrain: The RX 350 uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 295 hp and 267 lb-ft, paired with an 8-speed automatic. It is tuned more for ride quality than straight-line speed, and the transmission is described as quick and well matched to the engine.
- Safety package: The standard suite includes dynamic cruise, auto high beams, lane-departure warning and assist, and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection. Blind-spot monitoring is not standard, so check whether a given vehicle has that equipment.
- Infotainment: The available setup includes a 12.3-inch panoramic HD display and the Enform system. The interface is described as unintuitive, and the larger screen brings the remote-touch controller.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA estimates are 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined.
Which 2017 Lexus RX trim should I buy?
The 2017 Lexus RX is offered in 2 trim levels: RX 350 and RX 350 F Sport.
Here's the short version:
- RX 350: This is the more straightforward choice if you want the RX’s comfort, premium materials, and smooth ride without paying extra for the sportier hardware. It suits you best if you care more about luxury and everyday ease than sharper handling.
- RX 350 F Sport: This is the best-value trim if you want the most complete version of the RX. It adds the adaptive suspension, sport seats, unique styling touches, and a more engaging setup that the test-drive data says you should not skip if you’re shopping this model.
The Safety System + Package is standard, which strengthens the case for either trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Lexus RX?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,304 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.42% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,234.15, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Lexus RX's resale value?
The current average of $24,291 sits slightly below last year's $24,640.
That small decline suggests the RX has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. Even so, the model’s strong reputation for comfort and ownership satisfaction should help it stay appealing in the used market.
Because demand tends to follow vehicles that deliver a good ownership experience, the RX’s broad appeal should continue to support values better than average. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Lexus RX safe?
earns five-star ratings from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety suite includes dynamic cruise, auto high beams, lane-departure warning and assist, and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection. Blind-spot monitoring is not standard, so that is one feature gap to check for on individual listings.
The safety testing also notes Acceptable headlights from IIHS and four-star ratings in the individual overall front, driver front, and passenger front NHTSA tests. That makes equipment verification especially worthwhile if safety tech matters to you.
Should I buy a 2017 Lexus RX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.42% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 adds standard Safety System + Package coverage and broader F Sport availability.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $22,506, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $24,291 average.
- It emphasizes comfort and value with a softer, more traditional luxury-SUV focus.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $26,971, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $24,291 average.
- It adds three-row seating, though the extra row is a compromise.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, comfort, and equipment, the 2017 is the strongest all-around pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 can save you money while keeping the RX formula intact. If you need extra seating, the 2018 is the year to consider, but only if you can accept the trade-offs.
