CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Lexus RX
overall

Summary
With 109 currently listed for sale near Dallas, TX and an average price of $25,243, 46.8% of 2017 Lexus RXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Lexus RX 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
87.2% of 2017 RX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Lexus RX stands out as a luxury crossover that adds meaningful equipment without losing the comfort that defines it. For 2017, the F Sport package becomes available across the RX lineup, and the Safety System + Package is standard, giving the RX more value and broader appeal. It also gains rain-sensing wipers and auto-braking for the parking-assist system, small but useful updates that help round out the package.
Even with those additions, the RX’s strongest traits remain its premium interior materials and great ride quality. Those qualities make it easy to understand why many drivers appreciate it for comfort and value. The tradeoffs are familiar ones: it does not offer much cargo space, and its technology can be unintuitive, which may matter to buyers who want a more practical or easier-to-use luxury crossover.

I recently purchased a 2017 Lexus RX 350 for my wife to replace an older car. She is thrilled with every facet of it. Were both learning all the technological innovations and enjoying the comforts, ease of driving, safety features and sheer joy of finally owning a Lexus. Luxury at an affordable price!

Driving this car is comfortable. It has all the amenities that I was looking for. The heated steering wheel, heated and cooled seats plus the power mirrors which I didn’t know it had! I bought a CPO with. 18,418 miles on it and the warranty it comes with is awesome ! I definitely think it is a good value.

Is the 2017 Lexus RX a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Lexus RX earns a 4.62/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the premium interior materials, great ride quality, and overall value for money. The comfort-focused character also comes through in the smooth ride and upscale feel, while the available equipment adds to its appeal.
The main trade-offs are that the RX does not offer much cargo space and its technology can be unintuitive. That matters most if you want a more practical or easier-to-use luxury crossover.
Given its comfort-first mission and strong value positioning, it fits you best if you want a refined luxury crossover rather than a sporty or especially spacious one. Good and great deals account for 35.1% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Lexus RX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that feels reliable, dependable, and trouble-free over time, with many owners saying they can count on it for comfortable daily use. The expert evaluation also emphasizes Lexus’ reliability reputation and resale strength, which supports the RX’s long-term ownership appeal.
The RX’s dependability is reinforced by its comfort-oriented engineering and the sense that it is built for steady, low-drama ownership. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright mechanical drama and more about whether the specific vehicle has been maintained well and kept free of hidden wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Lexus RX?
At 57.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on condition details that matter in a luxury crossover: interior wear, technology operation, and evidence of prior bodywork or repairs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base RX is already well equipped, but the F Sport package adds adaptive suspension, sport seats, 20-inch wheels, a unique gauge cluster, steering wheel, shifter, aluminum trim, sporty exterior trim, and ambient lighting. The base form is more ordinary, while the F Sport is the standout if you want the most engaging setup.
- Powertrain: The RX 350 uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 295 hp and 267 lb-ft, paired with an 8-speed automatic. It is tuned more for ride quality than straight-line speed, but it still feels strong enough for everyday driving.
- Safety package: The Safety System + Package includes dynamic cruise, auto high beams, lane-departure warning and assist, and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection. Blind-spot monitoring is not standard, so check whether a given vehicle has it.
- Infotainment: The available 12.3-inch panoramic HD display is a major upgrade over the base 8-inch setup, and it can be paired with the remote-touch interface. Wireless smartphone integration and OTA capability are not stated here.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA estimates are 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined.
Which 2017 Lexus RX trim should I buy?
The 2017 Lexus RX is offered in 2 trim levels: RX 350 and RX 350 F Sport.
Here's the short version:
- RX 350: This is the trim to start with if you want the RX’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. It delivers the smooth ride, upscale cabin, and strong safety equipment that define the model, and it makes the most sense if you value comfort and value over sportier hardware.
- RX 350 F Sport: This is the best-value choice if you want the most complete RX experience. It adds adaptive suspension, sport seats, 20-inch wheels, and distinctive styling and cabin upgrades, making it the trim most likely to justify the extra spend if you care about driving feel.
The Safety System + Package is standard, but blind-spot monitoring is not standard and may still require a closer look on individual listings.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Lexus RX?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,252 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.06% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,237, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Lexus RX's resale value?
The current average of $24,118 sits slightly below last year's $24,626.
That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, the softer pricing means you should expect some depreciation pressure if you plan to move the vehicle again soon.
Even so, the RX’s strong reputation for comfort and value helps support demand. If you keep the vehicle in good condition and maintain it well, it should remain appealing to used buyers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Lexus RX safe?
The 2017 Lexus RX earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and five-star overall ratings from NHTSA, though NHTSA also reports four-star ratings in the individual overall front, driver front, and passenger front tests.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety suite includes dynamic cruise, auto high beams, lane-departure warning and assist, and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection. That gives the RX a strong baseline of driver assistance right from the start.
One caveat is that blind-spot monitoring is not standard, so you should confirm whether a specific listing includes it. IIHS also noted an Acceptable result for headlights, which is worth keeping in mind if you drive often at night.
Should I buy a 2017 Lexus RX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.06% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 adds the F Sport package across the lineup and makes the Safety System + Package standard.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $22,172, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $24,118 average.
- It emphasizes comfort and value with a smooth, relaxed driving experience.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $26,738, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $24,118 average.
- It stretches the RX into three-row territory for buyers who want extra seating.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of comfort, safety, and value, the 2017 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 can save you money while keeping the RX’s core strengths. If you need more seating, the 2018 is the year to consider, but you should be sure the added size is worth the higher price.
