Is the 2017 Kia Sportage a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Kia Sportage earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the comfort, handling, and feature content, including the panoramic sunroof and safety technology. They also call out its good value and reliability compared with other brands. In practical terms, that lines up well with the Sportage’s appeal as a compact crossover that gives you a sporty ride, useful cargo space, and a more distinctive look than many rivals.

The market also shows 33.3% good and great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2017 Kia Sportage reliable?

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained properly, since condition and service history matter more than the model’s overall reputation.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Sportage?

At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment and safety features work as expected. Because accident history is common enough to matter here, a clean, well-documented example is worth paying closer attention to.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX, EX, and SX Turbo each bring a different mix of equipment, and the base LX is the one most likely to leave you without the higher-end tech and safety features. The cabin is spacious, the styling is bold, and the moonroof and refined interior details help the higher trims feel more upscale.
• Powertrain: The LX and EX use a 2-liter 4-cylinder with 181 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, while the SX Turbo uses a turbocharged 2-liter four with 240 horsepower with front-wheel drive and 237 horsepower with all-wheel drive. The base engine is the efficiency-minded choice, while the turbo is the stronger performer.
• Safety package: The Sportage includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and avoidance. Adaptive cruise control is not available, and the high-tech safety features are not available on the base model.
• Infotainment: The base screen measures 5 inches, while 7- and 8-inch touchscreens are available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are optional on the LX and standard on the EX and SX Turbo.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine delivers 23 mpg city, 30 highway, and 26 combined with front-wheel drive, or 21 city, 25 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive. The turbo gets 21 mpg city, 26 highway, and 23 combined with front-wheel drive, or 20 city, 23 highway, and 21 combined with all-wheel drive.

Which 2017 Kia Sportage trim should I buy?

The 2017 Kia Sportage is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, EX, and SX Turbo.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Sportage’s styling, space, and core value without stretching for extras. It’s also the trim where you’re most likely to miss out on the higher-end infotainment and safety features.
• EX: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more of the tech and convenience that make the Sportage feel modern, including standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the trim to focus on.
• SX Turbo: This is the one to choose if you want the strongest performance, with the turbocharged engine and paddle shifters adding a more energetic driving experience. It suits you best if you care more about power and features than keeping the purchase price down.

The safety-tech features are not available on the base model, so if those matter to you, avoid the LX.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Sportage?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,045 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.57% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,931, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Kia Sportage's resale value?

The current average of $10,931 sits slightly below last year's $11,455.

That price movement suggests the Sportage has softened enough to create a more buyer-friendly entry point today. For a future seller, that means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim, because the market is already pricing in some depreciation. If you buy well and keep the vehicle clean and documented, you’ll be in a better position when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

However, the Sportage earns a middling score of Acceptable for its LATCH ease of use and the worst score of Poor for headlight testing. It earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Sportage includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and avoidance. Adaptive cruise control is not available, and the high-tech safety features are not available on the base model.

Should I buy a 2017 Kia Sportage or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.57% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 Sportage stands out for its bold styling, sporty ride, great technology, and solid value.

The bottom line: If you want a used compact crossover with strong value, good owner satisfaction, and a distinctive personality, the 2017 is the one to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can shop aggressively for a lower-mileage, well-kept example and use the softened market to your advantage.
