Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Sportage 4.82 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Sportage stands out in the compact-crossover crowd by refusing to be dull. Kia gave it bold styling, and the result is a vehicle that aims to be more memorable than the typical sensible family hauler. It also brings a sporty ride, which helps reinforce the idea that this crossover is meant to be enjoyable as well as practical.
That appeal is backed up by the usual compact-crossover advantages: a car platform that supports smooth handling, a spacious interior, improved fuel economy, available all-wheel drive, and added cargo space. The Sportage also earns points for great technology and solid value, making it attractive to buyers who want a crossover that feels well equipped without losing its sense of personality. Owners echo that formula, often praising its comfort, handling, panoramic sunroof, safety technology, and overall value, while a few wish it delivered even better fuel efficiency.

Car was amazing. It had more power than it need...which was good. It was in excellent condition with extremely low miles for a vehicle that was 5 years old. It wasnt missing anything that I can think of. I would compare this vehicle to a top of the line sport model of a Hyundai Santa Fe or Honda CRX/Element

Great vehicle! Comfortable, responsive, good road visibility. Heated seats and power driver seat are a great feature along with the climate control and Apple Play. Perfect fit for our family. Good value for the type of vehicle we were shopping for.

I feel like I got a great car at a fantastic price! I did my homework and feel like I can trust this brand. It is just as nice and equipped as my sisters Honda CRV. Its has a better reliability factor than my Jeep Patriot. Looking forward to traveling in this car.

Yes — the 2017 Kia Sportage earns a 4.82/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfort, handling, panoramic sunroof, safety technology, and overall value. That lines up well with the Sportage’s use case as a compact crossover that aims to be practical without feeling plain, especially if you want a vehicle with a sporty ride and strong equipment for the money.
The market also looks reasonably supportive, with 30.8% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2017 Kia Sportage reliable?
Owners rate it 4.82/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability and good value compared with other brands, along with a generally trouble-free ownership experience for many buyers. The expert evaluation also emphasizes peace of mind through Kia’s long warranty coverage, which helps reinforce the Sportage’s dependability story.
Kia’s warranty coverage adds another layer of confidence for used buyers, but you should still verify maintenance history and overall condition because long-term ownership risk always rises when prior care is unknown.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Sportage?
At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a lower-priced example. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment you want is actually present on the trim you’re shopping. Because the Sportage’s value proposition depends heavily on features and condition, a clean, well-kept example matters more than chasing the cheapest listing.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX is the entry point, while the EX adds more equipment and the SX Turbo brings the strongest engine and the most upscale feel. The base trim misses some of the higher-tech safety content, so feature gaps matter if you want a more complete package.
- Powertrain: The LX and EX use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 181 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, while the SX Turbo uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 240 horsepower in front-wheel-drive form and 237 horsepower with all-wheel drive. The base engine is described as lackluster, while the turbo is quick.
- Safety package: The Sportage includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and forward-collision avoidance. Adaptive cruise control is not available, and the high-tech safety content is not offered on the base model.
- Infotainment: The base touchscreen is 5 inches, with 7- and 8-inch screens available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are optional on the LX and standard on the EX and SX Turbo, and UVO eServices adds connected features such as roadside assistance and parking-location reminders.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine returns 23 mpg city, 30 highway, and 26 combined with front-wheel drive, or 21 city, 25 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive. The turbo engine is rated at 21 city, 26 highway, and 23 combined with front-wheel drive, or 20 city, 23 highway, and 21 combined with all-wheel drive.
Which 2017 Kia Sportage trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Sportage is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, EX, SX Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry trim, and it gives you the core Sportage experience at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the styling, space, and basic tech without paying for the stronger engine or extra convenience features.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more equipment while keeping the same 2.0-liter engine. It also gets standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which makes it the sweet spot if you want a more modern daily driver without jumping to the top trim.
- SX Turbo: This is the trim to choose if you want the quickest powertrain and the most fully loaded feel. It adds the turbocharged engine, paddle shifters, and the most premium equipment, so it suits you best if performance and features matter more than price.
The safety package is available, but the base model does not get the high-tech safety content.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Sportage?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,056 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.88% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,094, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Sportage's resale value?
The current average of $11,241 sits slightly below last year's $11,574.
That tells you the market has softened, which can work in your favor as a buyer but may temper what a future seller can expect. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you’ll be better positioned to limit depreciation losses. The Sportage’s value-oriented reputation and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.82/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Sportage safe?
The 2017 Kia Sportage is an IIHS 2017 Top Safety Pick. It earns five-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The Sportage includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and forward-collision avoidance. It also comes with the expected airbags, traction control, a reversing camera, and LATCH anchors. One important caveat is that adaptive cruise control is not available, and the high-tech safety content is not offered on the base model. The IIHS headlight result is also a weak point, with a Poor rating.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Sportage or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.88% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.82/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out for its bold styling, sporty ride, great technology, and solid value.
The bottom line: If you want a used compact crossover with strong owner satisfaction, good tech, and a market that has eased a bit on price, the 2017 is a sensible target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also use the softer market to compare against nearby model years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than the cheapest one.
