CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Niro
overall

Summary
With 120 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,293, 29.2% of 2017 Kia Niro listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Niro 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
60.8% of 2017 Kia Niro listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Niro stands out as a hybrid that aims to be more than a fuel-sipping commuter. Kia designed it for buyers who want comfort and practicality without giving up the efficiency benefits of a hybrid, and its crossover-like styling helps it feel less conventional than the typical wedge-shaped hybrid image. The overall impression is that the Niro’s parts add up to something stronger than the sum of its individual specs.
What makes it appealing is the balance it strikes. The Niro offers a comfortable interior and a spacious rear seat, and Kia’s estimate of up to 50 mpg combined adds to its appeal for shoppers focused on efficiency. At the same time, the car is not without compromises: Kia made some tradeoffs in fuel economy and practicality in pursuit of broader appeal, and the Niro is described as unable to compete on an even playing field against some better-known rivals.

I have owned a Niro since 2020, and they are definitely a good investment. Though it costs a little more to purchase due to being a hybrid, you more than compensate with smooth ride and excellent gas mileage.

The kia niro looks to be a suv. But its a compact SUV with very little backseat room..its too small unless youre looking for a compact suv. Didnt like the roadnoise on our test drive

How much does the 2017 Kia Niro cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,243 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,068 |
| Year-Round High | $11,378 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,890 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +3.24% |
Prices are up 3.24% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 119 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2017 Kia Niro a good car?
Generally — 4/5 from owners and 6.83/10 from experts point to a solid overall package. The Niro is aimed at buyers who want comfort and practicality without giving up hybrid efficiency, and its crossover-like styling helps it feel less conventional than a typical hybrid. It also offers a comfortable interior, a spacious rear seat, and up to 50 mpg combined, though Kia made some tradeoffs in fuel economy and practicality in pursuit of broader appeal. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Technology.
27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you still have room to shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Kia Niro reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Niro’s hybrid system is described as well integrated, with the gas engine and electric motor working together without feeling like dueling powerplants. Its brake feel is also described as more predictable and smooth than the regenerative brakes on other hybrids, which supports a calmer ownership experience. Kia’s Uvo system can also remind you about scheduled maintenance and help you book service, which adds convenience over time.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the hybrid hardware, brakes, and overall condition have been maintained properly, since repair costs can matter more on a hybrid than on a simpler gas-only car.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Niro?
At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or any signs of uneven wear. Focus on overall condition, since the Niro’s appeal depends on getting the comfort, practicality, and efficiency benefits without inheriting hidden problems. It’s also worth checking that the hybrid system, brakes, and electronics behave normally during a test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The entry-level FE and midrange LX and EX trims are not as lavishly appointed, while Touring trim adds leather seats and a quieter highway experience. The base trim also misses some convenience and safety equipment that you may want to have.
- Powertrain: The Niro uses a 104-hp, 1.6-liter gasoline engine paired with a 43-hp electric motor and a 1.56kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, routed through a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It is tuned for smooth hybrid operation rather than quick acceleration.
- Safety package: Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the EX and Touring, but not available on the FE or LX. Automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and smart cruise control are optional on the LX, EX, and Touring, but not available at all on the FE.
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with a 7-inch touchscreen. Uvo is standard on all trims, and Touring adds an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation plus a premium 8-speaker sound system with subwoofer.
- Fuel efficiency: Kia’s estimate of up to 50 mpg combined is a major draw, and the model is positioned as a comfortable and efficient compact crossover.
Which 2017 Kia Niro trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Niro is offered in 4 trim levels: FE, LX, EX, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- FE: This is the simplest way into the Niro, and it still gives you Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 7-inch touchscreen, and Uvo. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path to the Niro’s hybrid efficiency and can live without the extra convenience and safety features found higher up.
- LX: This is the trim that adds pushbutton start with a smart key, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers who want a little more everyday convenience without jumping too far in price.
- EX: This trim adds heated front seats and outside mirrors, plus blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. It’s the better pick if you want more comfort and a stronger safety feature set.
- Touring: This is the most upscale version, with leather seats, an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, and a premium 8-speaker sound system with subwoofer. It’s the right choice if you want the most comfort and tech the Niro offers.
Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the EX and Touring, but not available on the FE or LX.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Niro?
Act selectively, because this is still a seller’s market and the best listings can move quickly.
- Deal availability: 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 119 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.24% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 60.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,068, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Niro's resale value?
The current average of $11,243 sits slightly above last year's $10,890.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. The year-round range also shows that pricing has stayed fairly tight, so well-kept examples should remain easier to position competitively. If you buy carefully now, you may be able to preserve value better than with a less efficient or less distinctive compact crossover.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Niro safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Niro has not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA. Even so, Kia did make several driver-assistance features available: blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the EX and Touring, while automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and smart cruise control are optional on the LX, EX, and Touring. Those features are not available at all on the FE, so trim choice matters if safety tech is a priority.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Niro or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.24% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out as Kia’s first dedicated hybrid, with a comfortable interior, spacious rear seat, and up to 50 mpg combined.
The bottom line: If you want the earliest Niro and value comfort, efficiency, and a crossover-like shape, the 2017 is a sensible buy as long as you shop carefully and verify condition. If you’re more price-sensitive, look for the best-maintained listing rather than chasing the cheapest one, since accident history and trim differences can matter a lot on this model year.
