CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Jeep Wrangler

Summary
With 7,601 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,354, 31.6% of 2017 Jeep Wranglers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Jeep Wrangler 4.58 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Jeep Wrangler stands out because it still delivers the classic Wrangler formula while adding enough everyday usability to broaden its appeal. It keeps the separate body-on-frame chassis, rigid live axles, fold-flat windshield, and ability to be driven without doors, yet it also offers power windows, remote power door locks, a navigation system, and available detachable sway bars. Jeep also gave this generation a standard four-door Unlimited version, making the Wrangler more practical without abandoning its off-road identity.
For buyers, the 2017 model’s appeal comes from its mix of rugged hardware and usable features. It has stability control, off-road-tuned anti-lock brakes, traction control with an electronic limited-slip differential, and the Rubicon’s standard electronic sway bar disconnect system. The Sunrider convertible soft top is standard, and an optional three-piece modular hardtop is available. The 2017 Wrangler also retains part-time four-wheel drive with high and low gearing, which reinforces its trail-ready character.
There are tradeoffs, though. Even with added comfort and technology, the Wrangler JK still has a poor ride on pavement and can be noisy at highway speeds. It also offers less cargo volume than other SUVs. For shoppers who value open-air freedom, strong off-road capability, and a design that stays true to Jeep’s roots, the 2017 Jeep Wrangler remains distinctive.

My wife is thrilled to have a manual transmission and loves the purple color. Wish it had heated seats, but oh well! Seems like a good value.

Love everything about this Jeep. Handling is great, comfortable ride. Feel like I am up enough to see over most cars. Has plenty of get up and go. Great turning radius.

The Jeep had a dent , rust underneath, damaged bumpers, had been in an accident, and torn carpet. The pictures did not depict these issues. I didn’t feel the price reflected these issues.

How much does the 2017 Jeep Wrangler cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,357 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,200.76 |
| Year-Round High | $21,090.19 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,090 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.22% |
Prices have softened 8.22% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 7,586 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $19,200.76, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Jeep Wrangler a good car?
Yes — the 4.58/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Reviewers repeatedly praise its fun driving experience, comfortable ride, and performance and value, which gives you a clear sense of why it resonates with shoppers. The Wrangler also fits well if you want a vehicle that stays true to its off-road identity while still offering enough everyday usability, including modern convenience features and improved accessibility for this generation. With 31.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a compelling purchase.
Is the 2017 Jeep Wrangler reliable?
Owners rate it 4.58/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a vehicle that many people find dependable enough to live with over time, especially when they value its rugged character and consistent performance. That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to condition and maintenance history, because long-term ownership risk rises quickly when prior use or upkeep has been uneven.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Jeep Wrangler?
At 70% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from ones with prior damage or repairs. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing photos and description leave any gaps about condition. Focus on body condition, signs of wear, and whether the vehicle’s current state matches the seller’s presentation.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Jeep Wrangler?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 7,586 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.22% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,200.76, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Jeep Wrangler's resale value?
The current average of $19,357 sits slightly below last year's $21,090.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more selectively now and may limit how much depreciation is left to absorb later. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be better positioned when it comes time to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.58/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Jeep Wrangler or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.58/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $17,659, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $19,357 average.
- It keeps the Wrangler’s rugged simplicity and year-round open-air appeal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $21,512, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $19,357 average.
- It brings a thoroughly updated redesign with improved performance, practicality, and technology.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, owner satisfaction, and available inventory, the 2017 is the primary year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2016 can save you money while preserving the Wrangler formula. If you want the newer redesign and can stretch your budget, the 2018 is the stronger upgrade path.
