CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee
overall

Summary
With 4,342 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,560.00, 30.9% of 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokees for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.77 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
61.7% of 2017 Grand Cherokee models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee stands out because its lineup is broad enough to cover both luxury and the rugged capability Jeep is known for. It is also described as Jeep’s on-road/off-road range-topping vehicle, which helps explain why it has such a strong identity in the brand’s lineup. The expert impression is that it carries a personality and charm beyond the usual upscale comparison points, and the Trailhawk is singled out as a clear example of that character.
That mix of strengths makes the 2017 Grand Cherokee appealing to buyers who want a vehicle that can feel refined without giving up Jeep’s off-road reputation. Owners echo that appeal by praising its comfortable ride, spacious interior, luxury features, performance, safety, and towing capability. The main drawbacks noted are gas mileage and some concerns about interior material quality, so it is not the best choice for shoppers who prioritize efficiency or the most premium cabin finish above all else.

I am currently buying my second Grand Cherokee, it’s a fantastic vehicle! Only sold my first one because I moved to Chicago and had no need for a vehicle. It drives great, very quiet road noise, and super comfortable. Both of my GC’s are the Altitude trim and the suede and leather combo is so nice. I also love the infotainment system, great layout, simple and everything is sturdy. Nothing feels cheap in this vehicle!

Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a 4.77/5 user rating and an 8.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, spacious interior, and luxury features. They also highlight its performance, safety, and towing capability, which fits a vehicle that is meant to balance everyday use with more adventurous driving. The broad lineup gives you room to choose a version that leans more refined or more rugged, depending on what you want from your SUV.
The market also shows 31.1% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.77/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling SUV with strong comfort, performance, and capability, and many reviewers describe it as a vehicle they can count on for both daily driving and towing. The expert impression also reinforces its long-running appeal as a well-rounded Jeep with real personality and charm.
The 3.6-liter V6 and available 4-wheel-drive systems are built for broad use, and the Trailhawk’s off-road hardware adds another layer of durability-minded capability. The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a capable, feature-rich SUV can hide expensive wear if it has been used hard or poorly maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
At 61.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has been used for towing or off-road driving. Focus on signs of uneven wear, repair quality, and whether the cabin and exterior condition match the mileage and asking price. Because this model can be configured in very different ways, it is worth checking that the equipment level matches what you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Laredo is the base trim and comes with fog lights, halogen quad headlights, 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, dual-zone automatic temperature control, a USB port, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. The Limited adds leather seating, power-adjustable front seats, heated front and second-row seats, 18-inch polished wheels, and a body-colored front fascia with bright insert.
- Powertrain: The base engine is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with 293 horsepower and an 8-speed automatic transmission. You can also find a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 360 horsepower or a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 with 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Quadra-Trac I lacks the four-low option many drivers want, while Quadra-Trac II adds low-range capability.
- Safety package: The Grand Cherokee comes standard with front and side impact airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, and a reversing camera. Available driver aids include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and self-parking.
- Infotainment: The base setup is the Uconnect 5.0 touchscreen on the Laredo and Limited. Higher trims move to the 8.4-inch Uconnect screen, and the system is described as easy to use with voice-command support. The base stereo is a 6-speaker unit, while higher trims can add premium audio.
- Fuel efficiency: The owner feedback points to gas mileage as a drawback, and the expert evaluation also notes that efficiency is not the Grand Cherokee’s strong suit.
Which 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 6 trim levels: Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The Laredo gives you the essentials, but it is the least equipped version and misses the richer cabin materials and larger touchscreen found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Limited is the best value for many shoppers because it adds leather seating, heated front and second-row seats, power-adjustable front seats, and a more upscale feel without jumping to luxury-trim pricing.
- Premium/top trim: The Summit is the most luxurious mainstream choice here, with headlight washers, unique 20-inch wheels, chrome inserts, LED fog lamps, and an exclusive fascia design.
- Off-road trim: The Trailhawk is the one to choose if you want the most serious trail hardware, but its specialized setup makes it less of a default pick for typical daily driving.
The safety package is broad, but some driver-assistance features remain optional rather than standard.

What is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $14,579 sits slightly below last year's $16,031.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now but may limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For future sellers, the current softness means condition, mileage, and equipment will matter even more when it comes time to list the vehicle. Well-kept examples should still draw interest because this model has broad appeal and strong owner satisfaction.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.77/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?

The Grand Cherokee comes standard with a full complement of front and side impact airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, and a reversing camera. It also includes rear park assist. Available safety tech includes forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and self-parking.
Should I buy a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.06% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.77/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out for its broad trim range, strong performance, and Jeep’s signature mix of comfort and capability.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,272, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,579 average.
- It appeals to buyers who want towing ability, off-pavement capability, or Jeep styling.
The bottom line: choose the 2017 if you want the stronger all-around package and are comfortable paying a bit more for the current-year market. If your priority is saving money first, the 2016 is the better value path, especially if you can find one in clean condition with the right equipment.
