CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee
overall

Summary
With 375 currently listed for sale near Greensboro, NC and an average price of $12,817, 24.5% of 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokees for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.77 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
73.1% of 2017 Grand Cherokee models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee stands out for trying to cover two very different roles at once. Jeep’s own description of the lineup says it is broad enough to encompass luxury as well as the rugged capabilities the brand is known for, and the Grand Cherokee is presented as the on-road/off-road range-topping vehicle in Jeep’s lineup. That combination gives it a distinctive appeal for buyers who want an SUV that can feel upscale without giving up the brand’s off-road identity.
It also carries a personality that goes beyond the comparison Jeep management once used to describe it. The source notes that the Grand Cherokee has charm beyond English sensibilities, and points to the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk as proof of that character. In owner feedback, the 2017 model is praised for its comfortable ride, spacious interior, luxury features, performance, safety, and towing capabilities, which reinforces its broad appeal.
There are tradeoffs, though. Some reviewers mention concerns about gas mileage and the quality of interior materials, and a few felt those details did not fully match the vehicle’s price range. Even so, the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee remains distinctive because it blends comfort, capability, and a more premium feel in a way that few SUVs try to balance.

I am currently buying my second Grand Cherokee, it’s a fantastic vehicle! Only sold my first one because I moved to Chicago and had no need for a vehicle. It drives great, very quiet road noise, and super comfortable. Both of my GC’s are the Altitude trim and the suede and leather combo is so nice. I also love the infotainment system, great layout, simple and everything is sturdy. Nothing feels cheap in this vehicle!

| Year-Round High | $15,852 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,851 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.19% |
Prices have softened 9.19% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 4,325 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a 4.77/5 user rating and an 8.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, spacious interior, and luxury features, and they also highlight its performance, safety, and towing capabilities. That lines up with the model’s broad mission: you’re looking at an SUV meant to feel upscale while still delivering the rugged capability Jeep buyers expect. If you want one vehicle that can cover daily driving, family use, and tougher-duty needs, this year’s Grand Cherokee fits that brief well.
The market also shows 32.0% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.77/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle people feel good about living with over time, with repeated praise for comfort, capability, and the sense that it can be counted on for a wide range of uses. The expert evaluation also emphasizes its well-rounded nature and strong off-road hardware, which supports the idea that it’s built for more than just short-term appeal. The main ownership risk for used buyers is that some examples may have been worked hard, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage or heavily optioned example. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven wear, and any evidence that the vehicle’s comfort, electronics, or drivetrain systems haven’t been maintained carefully. Because this model can be used for both daily driving and tougher-duty tasks, condition matters as much as equipment.
Key things to evaluate:
Trim level: The Laredo is the base trim and comes with fog lights, halogen quad headlights, 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, dual-zone automatic temperature control, a USB port, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. The Limited adds leather seating, power-adjustable front seats, heated front and second-row seats, 18-inch polished wheels, and a body-colored front fascia with bright insert. The Overland adds LED fog lights, automatic high beams, a dual-pane panoramic moonroof, 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, rain-sensing wipers, perforated Nappa leather, and the 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen. The Summit adds headlight washers, unique 20-inch wheels, chrome inserts, LED fog lamps, and an exclusive fascia design. The Trailhawk stands apart with 18-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, skid plates, a matte black hood, and red tow hooks.
Powertrain: The base engine is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with 293 horsepower and an 8-speed automatic transmission. You can also get a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 360 horsepower or a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 with 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is available, along with multiple 4-wheel-drive systems.
Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side impact airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, a reversing camera, and rear park assist. Available features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and self-parking. Some of those features are optional rather than standard.
Infotainment: The base setup is the Uconnect 5.0 touchscreen display system on the Laredo and Limited. It includes climate controls, stereo menus, settings, and Bluetooth hands-free connectivity. Higher trims get the larger 8.4-inch Uconnect screen.
Fuel efficiency: Some reviewers mention concerns about gas mileage, so efficiency is worth weighing carefully if you plan to drive a lot.
Which 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 6 trim levels: Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Summit, SRT performance trims.
Here's the short version:
- Laredo: This is the entry point, and it gives you the essentials without much extra luxury. It makes sense if you want the Grand Cherokee’s core capability and styling at the lowest starting point.
- Altitude: This trim sits above the base model and is part of the broader value-oriented middle of the lineup. It’s a sensible step up if you want more presence without jumping to the pricier luxury trims.
- Limited: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds leather seating, heated front and second-row seats, and power-adjustable front seats while staying below the more expensive luxury-focused trims.
- Overland: This is the move if you want a more premium feel, with the panoramic moonroof, Nappa leather, LED lighting, and the larger 8.4-inch Uconnect screen.
- Summit: Choose this if you want the most upscale cabin treatment, including the exclusive fascia, chrome accents, headlight washers, and the upgraded audio system.
- SRT performance trims: This is the choice for buyers who want the performance-oriented side of the Grand Cherokee lineup.
The safety content notes that the Grand Cherokee can be equipped with forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and self-parking, but some of those features are optional rather than standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,325 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.19% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,395, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $14,395 sits slightly below last year's $15,851.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer now but may temper future resale gains if you plan to sell later. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that value retention will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment because the broader market has softened. Well-kept examples should still attract interest, especially from shoppers who want capability and a more premium feel in one SUV.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.77/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?
The Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a 5-star Overall crash rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It also earns a best score of Good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in moderate overlap front, side, rear, and roof-strength crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, a reversing camera, and rear park assist. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and self-parking. Some of those features are optional rather than standard, so you should verify the exact equipment on any used listing you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.19% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.77/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary highlights its broad appeal as a blend of comfort, capability, and upscale character.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,215, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,395 average.
- It appeals to buyers who want broad capability and Jeep styling, while accepting some compromise.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market mix of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2017 is the better primary target. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 is the sensible fallback because it costs less while still delivering the Grand Cherokee’s core appeal.
