CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
overall

Summary
With 1,425 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,399, 30.7% of 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sports for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
60.1% of 2017 Santa Fe Sport models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport stands out as a well-rounded midsize SUV that combines good looks, a comfortable interior, a roomy cargo area, and an affordable price. It is also described as safe, technologically advanced, quick, and built in the U.S.A., which gives it a broader appeal than its value-focused positioning might suggest.
That mix makes it easy to see why it would attract shoppers who want practicality without giving up comfort or features. The available third-row-seat and extra-cargo-space solution mentioned in the source also points to a broader Santa Fe lineup for buyers who need more room than the Sport provides. At the same time, the emphasis on the Sport’s cargo space and comfort suggests its strengths are in everyday usability rather than maximum passenger or hauling capacity.

Great turning radius, good visibility, and easy to drive. I shoveled the car out of 3+ feet of snow and it started right up! Got my family out of the extreme weather comfortably and safely.

Love this car. It has everything you could want. It dries very comfortably and smooth, the breaking is awesome, and the surround camera view is such a helper. The Seats in the back lay down almost completely flat, provide a great space to pack or go camping, and the storage compartments in the trunk are perfect. Everything fits like a puzzle that’s easy to solve.

OMG, I am in love with my new car. I have luxury features I didnt even know I needed; a heated steering wheel is an absolute necessity at this point. I love the luxury features in this mid size family SUV, heated and cooled seats, with read heated seats that are also adjustable; my kids love to recline. Apple and Android car play Hyundai did not discriminate. Panoramic moonroof, 360 camera, the navigation view appears as an actual map, and the ride is so incredible smooth I love to drive this baby in sport. There is so much to say about this vehicle great buy.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport?
At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment and technology still work as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base version uses a 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, while upgraded versions add a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and more equipment. The higher-spec test vehicle also had nearly all the options, which shows how much the feature set can expand as you move up.
- Powertrain: You can choose between a 4-cylinder and a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The turbocharged setup delivers 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and all-wheel drive is an option.
- Safety package: The SUV includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, dynamic headlights, and a multi-view camera system. Blue Link also adds SOS emergency assistance, automatic collision notification, and teen-driver features like speed and curfew alerts.
- Infotainment: Versions with navigation get an 8-inch touchscreen, while models without navigation use a 7-inch screen. Both systems include Android Auto, but not Apple CarPlay, and Blue Link subscription services are available.
- Fuel efficiency: The test vehicle averaged 21.5 mpg, and the source notes that this fell short of the EPA’s estimate of 23 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport trim should I buy?
The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is offered in 2 trim levels: Santa Fe Sport and Santa Fe Sport 2.0T.
Here's the short version:
- Santa Fe Sport: This is the starting point, and it uses the 185-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. It makes sense if you want the lower entry price and the core Santa Fe Sport formula without stepping up to the turbocharged setup.
- Santa Fe Sport 2.0T: This is the better-value choice if you want stronger performance, since it adds the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It suits you best if you want more passing power and a more responsive feel without moving out of the Santa Fe Sport lineup.
The safety content notes that the Santa Fe Sport earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating and includes a broad set of driver-assistance features, which strengthens the case for either trim.

- Inventory: There are 1,411 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.47% compared with last year.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport's resale value?
The current average of $11,393 sits slightly below last year's $12,725.
That decline suggests the model has become more affordable for used buyers, which can help you enter the market at a lower cost. For a future seller, though, it also means you should expect pricing pressure if the broader market stays soft.
The good news is that the Santa Fe Sport still has a strong value story, and its combination of comfort, practicality, and features should help it remain appealing to shoppers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport safe?
The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport earns a five-star crash-test rating from the federal government and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Blue Link adds SOS emergency assistance, automatic collision notification, and teen-driver tools such as speed and curfew alerts.
That combination makes the Santa Fe Sport a strong choice if safety is a top priority, especially because the source presents its crash performance and active-safety tech as a major strength.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.47% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 update brings revised styling, new infotainment systems, and a long list of new driver-assistance and safety technologies.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, safety, and features, the 2017 is the smart target year to shop. If your priority is simply the lowest possible purchase price, you can also compare nearby years, but the 2017 stands out because it adds meaningful updates while still sitting at an attractive used-market price.
