CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

Summary
With 433 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,067, 30.9% of 2017 Hyundai Santa Fes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe 4.67 / 5 stars.
57.7% of 2017 Santa Fe models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe stands out as a practical, well-equipped midsize SUV with a strong value proposition. It offered a choice of four powertrains, including a 2.4-liter inline-four with 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, and a turbo 2.0-liter inline-four with 235 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque on Limited and Ultimate trims from 2019-2020. It also brought useful everyday features such as a small but usable touchscreen, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a safe exit assist system that could keep the doors locked if a blind-spot warning detected an oncoming car.
What makes this Santa Fe especially appealing is how much it improved the model’s design and cabin quality. The fourth generation introduced Hyundai’s bolder styling language, with thin LED running lamps above the headlights and a more recognizable face, while the interior added better soft-touch materials, more supportive seats, and practical touches like deep map pockets and heated seat controls on the doors. Buyers also got a two-row layout, which helped make the cabin more straightforward and usable, though the driving experience was described as more about value and execution than standout performance.
For shoppers, the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe’s appeal is in its balance of space, equipment, and comfort. It was available with features such as a larger touchscreen on higher trims, a hybrid powertrain in later model years, and a refreshed exterior and interior update for 2021, but the core draw remained the same: a family-friendly SUV that felt more polished than earlier Santa Fe generations. Its main limitation is that it was not especially exciting to drive, but for buyers prioritizing usefulness and features, that was often an acceptable tradeoff.

This is an excellent choice for me. It had all the features I wanted and it was the best value when compared to the Acura MDX or the Mazda CX9 which were the only other mid size crossovers with a third row seat. Most other vehicles were larger and didnt have a smooth ride. We ended up buying a Toyota Highlander because the seats in the Santa Fe were too narrow for my husband.

The ultimate trim package is great. Smooth ride, great features, fantastic warranty for CPO. Wish the ultimate included auto lift gate on the back, but not a major flaw.

Nice size...not too big but big enough. Powerful 6 cylinder that can tow. Stylish for an SUV.

How much does the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,041 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,921.94 |
| Year-Round High | $13,045.11 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,044 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.69% |
Prices have softened 7.69% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 432 listings available, which suggests you have some room to compare prices and conditions.
If you find a listing below $11,921.94, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe earns a 4.67/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Drivers consistently praise its smooth ride, powerful engine, and value for money. The available luxury features also stand out, and the model’s size is a plus if you want a practical family SUV with useful space.
For you, that makes it a strong fit if you want comfort, everyday usefulness, and a well-equipped midsize SUV rather than a sporty driving experience. 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still opportunities to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also highlights reliability, along with a trouble-free feel and the kind of dependability you want from a family SUV. That combination suggests the Santa Fe can be a sensible choice if you want something you can count on over time.
For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about how well a specific example has been maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe?
At 55.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any promising listing. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the vehicle’s wear matches its mileage and asking price.
Because this model is often chosen for comfort and utility, you should also pay close attention to interior condition and how well the features work.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without rushing.
- Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 432 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.69% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,921.94, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe's resale value?
The current average of $12,041 sits slightly below last year's $13,044.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, condition and maintenance history will matter even more because buyers tend to reward clean, well-kept examples.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $14,435, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $12,041 average.
- It emphasizes safety and family-friendly usefulness in a straightforward three-row package.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2017 is the stronger starting point because pricing is softer and inventory is still available. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer-year alternative, the 2018 is the cleaner secondary path for buyers who prioritize a more recent model-year choice over upfront savings.
