2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid test drive
overall
A no-nonsense hybrid hatchback from Hyundai stands out for its specs, not its looks.
Hyundai must be playing the long game with the all-new Ioniq. After all, unless it's preparing for gas to hit $4 a gallon again, why else would a carmaker release a compact hybrid hatchback when Americans are ignoring small, fuel-efficient cars in favor of crossovers and SUVs?
If gas prices do spike again, the Ioniq Hybrid will already be on dealer lots, awaiting buyers attracted by a promise of 55 mpg. An all-electric model is also available if you live in California, and a plug-in hybrid will hit dealerships later this year.
But fuel economy isn’t the Ioniq’s only selling point. Compared to the segment-leading Toyota Prius, the Hyundai looks and feels familiar—which should appeal to the sort of buyer who wants an efficient hatchback, but doesn’t like the Prius’ futuristic styling.

Love this car. The moment we sat in it we loved how it drove. The interior is very nice for the cost and has Apple car play, blind spot indicator and great mileage. We drove it right away on a 2.5 hr trip and it was pretty comfortable. Definitely recommend this if you’re moving to a hybrid

Great little car! Smooth handling, great entertainment system with Apple/Android play. Very roomy, even in back. I wish it came with a trunk cover. Also, as many reviewers said, you have to start braking at an earlier distance.

Car layout is familiar to my Sonata and enjoyable. Rear window view is slightly obscured by a divider, similar to other hatchbacks with sloping rear window. If that wasnt the situation, Id rate it 5/5 stars.

Is the 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid a good car?
Yes — 4.5/5. The expert rating is 7.3/10, and the model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Technology. The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is aimed at you if you want an efficient hatchback that feels conventional rather than futuristic, with a familiar cabin layout and a practical, no-nonsense personality. Its biggest strength is fuel economy, with Hyundai saying it delivers 55 mpg, and it is best suited to shoppers who value efficiency and straightforward design over standout styling. The model has 37.8% good and great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Hyundai backs the Ioniq with a 10-year powertrain warranty and a lifetime hybrid battery warranty, which adds peace of mind if you plan to keep the car for a while. The hybrid system is described as responsive, the brakes are smooth for a hybrid, and the car is tuned for comfortable highway cruising. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the car’s condition and maintenance history are clean before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid?
At 68.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important. You should run a vehicle history report, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, and pay close attention to body condition, repair quality, and how the car drives on the road. Focus on whether the car feels consistent in braking, acceleration, and cabin operation, since those are the areas where you’ll notice wear or past damage most quickly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The entry-level Blue gives you dual-zone climate control, a proximity key, and satellite radio, while the SEL adds heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a 7-inch LCD display in the gauge cluster, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Limited adds leather seats, and the Ultimate Package brings premium audio, wireless smartphone charging, a power driver’s seat with memory, and some active safety options. The base trim is the one with the biggest feature gaps, especially if you want driver-assistance tech.
- Powertrain: The Ioniq uses a hybrid setup with a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission instead of the more common eCVT. It feels more responsive than many hybrids, with linear and predictable acceleration at speed, though there can be a slight lag when you accelerate hard from a stop. Hyundai says the Blue returns 57 mpg city and 59 mpg highway, while the SEL and Limited are rated at 55 mpg city and 54 mpg highway.
- Safety package: Lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and smart cruise control are available, but they cost extra. On the SEL, active safety can be added with the Tech Package, while on the Limited it is bundled into the Ultimate Package. The Blue does not offer active safety.
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across all trims. The Limited adds an Infinity sound system and BlueLink, which lets you check on and remotely start the car from your smartphone or smart watch.
- Fuel efficiency: Hyundai says the Blue delivers 57 mpg city and 59 mpg highway, while the SEL and Limited are rated at 55 mpg city and 54 mpg highway. In testing, the car returned about 45 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid is offered in 3 trim levels: Blue, SEL, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Blue: This is the least expensive way into the Ioniq, and it still gives you dual-zone climate control, a proximity key, satellite radio, and the best fuel economy ratings in the lineup. It makes sense if you want the lowest purchase price and care most about efficiency, but it leaves out active safety features.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim. It adds heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a 7-inch LCD display in the gauge cluster, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and it can be paired with the Tech Package for active safety. If you want the strongest mix of price, comfort, and available safety tech, this is the one to target.
- Limited: This trim adds leather seats and can be upgraded with the Ultimate Package for premium audio, wireless smartphone charging, a power driver’s seat with memory, and active safety features. It suits you if you want the most upscale Ioniq, but the added equipment pushes the price up quickly.
If you want active safety, the SEL with the Tech Package is the smartest path; on the Limited, those features are bundled into the Ultimate Package.

Is the 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts. Lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and smart cruise control are available, but they are not standard. On the Blue, active safety isn’t available at all, while the SEL can add it through the Tech Package and the Limited gets it only as part of the Ultimate Package. Standard safety equipment includes a reversing camera, stability control, and seven airbags. The car has not been rated by IIHS or NHTSA.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 37.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Hyundai says the Ioniq Hybrid offers 55 mpg, and the car’s appeal is rooted in efficiency and straightforward design rather than flash.
The bottom line: If you want a conventional-feeling hybrid hatchback with strong fuel economy and a lower asking price than many rivals, the 2017 Ioniq Hybrid is a smart place to start. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, focus on the SEL for the best mix of value and equipment; if you want the cheapest entry point, the Blue still gives you the core efficiency story.
