About 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid
overall
A no-nonsense hybrid hatchback from Hyundai stands out for its specs, not its looks.
Hyundai must be playing the long game with the all-new Ioniq. After all, unless it's preparing for gas to hit $4 a gallon again, why else would a carmaker release a compact hybrid hatchback when Americans are ignoring small, fuel-efficient cars in favor of crossovers and SUVs?
If gas prices do spike again, the Ioniq Hybrid will already be on dealer lots, awaiting buyers attracted by a promise of 55 mpg. An all-electric model is also available if you live in California, and a plug-in hybrid will hit dealerships later this year.
But fuel economy isn’t the Ioniq’s only selling point. Compared to the segment-leading Toyota Prius, the Hyundai looks and feels familiar—which should appeal to the sort of buyer who wants an efficient hatchback, but doesn’t like the Prius’ futuristic styling.

Love this car. The moment we sat in it we loved how it drove. The interior is very nice for the cost and has Apple car play, blind spot indicator and great mileage. We drove it right away on a 2.5 hr trip and it was pretty comfortable. Definitely recommend this if you’re moving to a hybrid

Great little car! Smooth handling, great entertainment system with Apple/Android play. Very roomy, even in back. I wish it came with a trunk cover. Also, as many reviewers said, you have to start braking at an earlier distance.

Car layout is familiar to my Sonata and enjoyable. Rear window view is slightly obscured by a divider, similar to other hatchbacks with sloping rear window. If that wasnt the situation, Id rate it 5/5 stars.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid a good car?
Yes — 4.5/5. The expert rating is 7.33/10, and the model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Technology. The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is aimed at you if you want a compact, fuel-efficient hatchback that feels conventional rather than futuristic, and its biggest draw is its 55 mpg fuel-economy focus. That makes it especially appealing if you value practicality and straightforward design over flash. Good and great deals make up 31.9% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Hyundai backs the Ioniq with a 10-year powertrain warranty and a lifetime hybrid battery warranty, which adds peace of mind if you plan to keep the car for a while. The hybrid system is described as responsive for the class, with smooth braking and a comfortable highway demeanor, which are good signs for everyday durability and livability. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the hybrid system and maintenance history are clean before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid?
At 70.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important. You should start with a vehicle-history report, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks body repairs, hybrid-system operation, and brake feel. Because this car’s appeal is rooted in efficiency and low running costs, you should also focus on whether the car still delivers the kind of condition and maintenance record that supports that mission.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The entry-level Blue gives you dual-zone climate control, a proximity key, and satellite radio, while the SEL adds heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a 7-inch LCD display in the gauge cluster, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Limited adds leather seats, and the Ultimate Package brings premium audio, wireless smartphone charging, a power driver’s seat with memory, and some active safety options. The base trim leaves active safety unavailable.
- Powertrain: The Ioniq uses a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission rather than the more common hybrid eCVT setup, and it feels more responsive than many hybrids. It is tuned for smooth, predictable acceleration and comfortable highway cruising, though there can be a slight lag from a stop.
- Safety package: Lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and smart cruise control are available, but they cost extra. On the SEL, active safety can be added through the Tech Package; on the Limited, it is bundled into the Ultimate Package. The Blue does not offer active safety.
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across all trims. The Limited adds an Infinity sound system and BlueLink telematics for remote access from your smartphone or smartwatch.
- Fuel efficiency: Hyundai says the Ioniq Hybrid offers 55 mpg, and the Blue is rated at 57 mpg city and 59 highway. The SEL and Limited share 55 city/54 highway ratings. In testing, it returned about 45 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is offered in 3 trim levels: Blue, SEL, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Blue: This is the least expensive way into the Ioniq, and it still gives you dual-zone climate control, a proximity key, satellite radio, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and care most about efficiency, but it does not offer active safety.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim. It adds heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a 7-inch LCD display in the gauge cluster, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and it can be paired with the Tech Package for active safety. If you want the strongest balance of price and equipment, this is the one to target.
- Limited: This trim adds leather seats and, with the Ultimate Package, brings premium audio, wireless smartphone charging, a power driver’s seat with memory, and some active safety options. It suits you if you want the most upscale Ioniq, but the added cost can push it into territory where you should compare carefully against other hybrids.
On safety, active safety features are not standard on the Blue, and they remain optional on the higher trims through packages.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 72 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 70.8% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid safe?
It does come standard with a reversing camera, stability control, and seven airbags. Lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and smart cruise control are available, but they are not standard, and the entry-level Blue does not offer active safety at all. That means you should pay close attention to trim and package content if safety tech matters to you.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Hyundai says the Ioniq Hybrid offers 55 mpg, and the car’s familiar design and straightforward layout make it a practical choice for efficiency-focused shoppers.
The bottom line: If you want a used hybrid hatchback that emphasizes fuel savings, familiar controls, and a conventional feel, the 2017 Ioniq Hybrid is a sensible pick. If you’re price-sensitive, the Blue keeps the entry cost down, but the SEL is the trim to focus on if you want the best mix of value and equipment.
