Summary
With 115 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,131, 33.0% of 2017 Hyundai Elantra listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Hyundai Elantra 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra stands out as a full redesign that brings a fresh look inside and out, along with a strong emphasis on technology, efficiency, and safety. It is presented as a compact car that feels more substantial than its price might suggest, with styling, ergonomics, and tech that help it rise above the usual small-car expectations.
What makes it especially appealing is the way it combines everyday practicality with a more upscale feel. The available owner feedback lines up with that impression, pointing to comfort, fuel efficiency, and value for money as major strengths, along with comfortable seating and advanced technology. A noted drawback is acceleration power, so buyers looking for a more energetic driving experience may find it less convincing than its other qualities suggest.

I just lost my Hyundai 2017 in a crash. It was my second Elantra and I drove them both for 8 years. I did routine maintenance but never had any repair bills . They are great cars and that is why I am looking to buy another one.

I recently bought the Limited trim from CarHub in Stafford, VA. The features are great, it drives smoothly, I feel safe in this car, and the value was great as Im able to pay it off without destroying my wallet. I genuinely feel like this car matches up to a Corolla and a Civic, so I highly recommend it!

The 2017 model has some nice upgrades compared with the previous generation. Different front appearance. It also has a better gas mileage and a more sophisticated entertainment system. I would have loved to see also heated seats and a sun-roof which is only available in certain sport versions. But all in all I am very happy about this car and consider it a good value.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback summary points to a car that drivers feel good about living with over time, especially because of its comfort, fuel efficiency, and value. It also describes the Elantra as a strong alternative to pricier competitors, which supports the idea that buyers see it as a dependable everyday choice. The expert notes reinforce that impression by emphasizing value-oriented engineering and a well-rounded small-car package.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure a specific car has been maintained well, since condition will matter more than the model’s broad reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?
At 44.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, and how well the car’s technology and safety features work in real-world use. Because this model is valued for comfort and tech, you’ll want to make sure those strengths still show up in the specific car you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE trim includes power windows and locks, a 6-speaker stereo with AM/FM/XM radio and a CD player, and USB/auxiliary audio inputs. The Limited adds Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity with voice control, keyless entry, push-button start, and steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, so it is the better choice if you want a more complete feature set.
- Powertrain: The Elantra uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with drive modes for Normal, Sport, and Eco. Fuel economy is rated at 29 mpg city and 38 highway, while the Limited returns 28 mpg city and 37 highway.
- Safety package: Available safety tech includes electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, tire pressure monitoring, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection. Some of the more advanced features are optional rather than standard.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes USB/auxiliary audio inputs and SiriusXM satellite radio. Higher trims add navigation with turn-by-turn instructions in the color display in the gauge cluster, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available through the touchscreen.
- Fuel efficiency: The Elantra is rated at 29 mpg city, 38 highway, and 33 combined, while the Limited is rated at 28 mpg city and 37 highway. The SE with the manual is rated at 26 mpg city and 36 highway.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $9,384 sits slightly below last year's $10,074.
That softer pricing suggests the Elantra has become more accessible for buyers, which can make it easier to sell if you price it competitively. For future sellers, the current market shows that value matters a lot here, so a clean history and strong condition should help your car stand out. If you keep the car well maintained and present it well, you’ll be better positioned to capture demand from shoppers looking for a practical, tech-friendly compact sedan.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 44.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.85% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out for its redesign, strong technology focus, and high expert marks for value and safety.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $8,282, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,384 average.
- It is roomy, efficient, simple, and safe.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2017 is the better pick because it brings the redesign, better tech, and stronger safety emphasis.
