Why it stands out
The 2016 Hyundai Elantra stands out in the compact car class by balancing comfort and efficiency with a design that still looks futuristic rather than dated. Its styling is a major part of the appeal, and the car is described as roomy, efficient, simple, and safe, which helps explain why it remains an impressive entry even though its design is now 6 years old.
It is also notable for being neither smooth and refined nor rough and gruff, a character that suggests a middle ground rather than an extreme personality. That same straightforward nature is part of its value, but buyers should also note that some drivers have been disappointed by the lack of Bluetooth and a spare tire.

We loved our Elantra! Great ride, great on gas and it was put to the ULTIMATE TEST when during a downpour a tractor trailer flew by and swerved into our lane causing us to hydroplane across 3 lanes then down an embankment where we flipped on our side and finally came to a stop when we hit a tree line. Climbed out the top through the passenger window and walked away with only a few bumps and bruises. The rescuers, police and tow truck guys all said wow, that car saved your lives!

I love the Hyndai Elantra. It is a very solid, good steering, roomy, reliable and sporty looking vehicle. I believe it is comparable to a Honda Civic or Chevy Cruze.

I bought the 2016 GL model late 2015 I have been very impressed - a wider body than the Ford Focus i owned, great features, cruise even with a Manual, AC electric windows and locks, blutooth, very comfortable and smooth quiet engine. very sharp looking and excellent mileage. my vehicle now has 170,000 kms and runs like new, no issues mechanically at all just oil changes and filters and brakes which I did myself - parts very easy to obtain online line rotors etc.

Drivers consistently praise its comfort, reliability, and excellent fuel economy, and many also like its smooth ride and attractive design. In use, it comes across as roomy, efficient, simple, and safe, which makes it a strong fit if you want a practical compact car that still feels appealing rather than basic. Good and great deals account for 27.0% of listings, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability, dependable everyday use, and a car that many owners feel good about keeping over time. The expert evaluation also describes favorable dependability ratings and low predicted ownership costs, which reinforces the Elantra’s reputation as a trouble-free choice for long-term use. Hyundai’s warranty and roadside assistance coverage adds another ownership perk, including flat-tire help during the coverage period. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the drivetrain and more about finding a well-kept example with complete service history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?
At 47.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s equipment matches what you expect from the trim you’re considering. Because some shoppers have also noted missing convenience features, it’s worth confirming the exact equipment on the specific car you’re viewing.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE is the entry point, while the Value Edition adds 16-inch aluminum wheels and a more polished look; the Sport is more powerful and has a tighter suspension, and the Limited is the upscale choice. The base SE can miss some equipment that appears on higher trims, including the reversing camera.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a 145-hp 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, with a 6-speed manual in the SE and a 6-speed automatic with Active Eco in the Value Edition and Limited. The setup is tuned for predictable, efficient everyday driving rather than excitement.
- Safety package: A reversing camera is standard on all but the base SE. The car is not available with modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies.
- Infotainment: The touchscreen radio system with Bluetooth is optional on the SE and standard on other versions. Higher trims add a 7-inch display, Pandora access, navigation, a premium sound system, and Blue Link subscription services.
- Fuel efficiency: The official EPA ratings are 28 mpg city/38 highway/32 combined, and the test loop returned 33.8 mpg.
Which 2016 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2016 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, Value Edition, Sport, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the least expensive path into the Elantra, but you should expect the fewest features. It makes sense if your priority is keeping the purchase price down and you’re comfortable with a more basic setup.
- Value Edition: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more upscale feel without pushing the car into luxury-car pricing. The added wheels and automatic transmission help it feel more complete for daily use.
- Sport: Choose this if you want the more powerful version and a tighter suspension. It is the right pick if you care more about a sharper driving feel than maximum comfort.
- Limited: This is the most upscale trim, with the richest feature set and the strongest appeal if you want the most convenience and tech. It is the trim to consider if you want the Elantra to feel as fully equipped as possible.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that the reversing camera is standard on all but the base SE.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,257 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.84% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 47.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,972, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $8,292 sits slightly below last year's $8,713.
That softer pricing suggests the Elantra has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. A lower entry cost today can make it easier to preserve value later, especially if you choose a clean, well-maintained example. Strong owner satisfaction also helps support demand when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra safe?
The 2016 Hyundai Elantra earns Good ratings from IIHS in most tests and an overall five-star rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The car includes a reversing camera, but it is standard only on all but the base SE. It is not available with modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies, so you should not expect the kind of active-safety suite found in newer compact cars. The main caveat is the IIHS small overlap frontal result, which is rated Acceptable rather than Good.
Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 47.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It balances comfort, efficiency, and value in a straightforward compact-car package.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $7,872, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,292 average.
- It offers strong value with generous space and useful features.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $9,568, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,292 average.
- It brings a full redesign with stronger technology and safety appeal.
The bottom line: The 2016 is the right pick if you want a value-focused compact car with strong owner satisfaction and a softer used-car price. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 is the cheaper route; if you want a more modern redesign, the 2017 is the upgrade to compare.
