Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Hyundai Elantra 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Hyundai Elantra stands out in the compact car class by striking a balance that is neither especially smooth and refined nor rough and gruff. That middle-ground character helps it feel easy to live with, and it is part of why the car impresses more than it distresses.
Its appeal also comes from a design that, even at six years old, still looks futuristic rather than dated. Beyond style, the Elantra is described as roomy, efficient, simple, and safe, which gives it broad everyday appeal for buyers who want value without unnecessary complexity. Owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for comfort, reliability, excellent fuel economy, a smooth ride, and attractive design. Some drivers, however, have been disappointed by the lack of Bluetooth and a spare tire.

We loved our Elantra! Great ride, great on gas and it was put to the ULTIMATE TEST when during a downpour a tractor trailer flew by and swerved into our lane causing us to hydroplane across 3 lanes then down an embankment where we flipped on our side and finally came to a stop when we hit a tree line. Climbed out the top through the passenger window and walked away with only a few bumps and bruises. The rescuers, police and tow truck guys all said wow, that car saved your lives!

I love the Hyndai Elantra. It is a very solid, good steering, roomy, reliable and sporty looking vehicle. I believe it is comparable to a Honda Civic or Chevy Cruze.

I bought the 2016 GL model late 2015 I have been very impressed - a wider body than the Ford Focus i owned, great features, cruise even with a Manual, AC electric windows and locks, blutooth, very comfortable and smooth quiet engine. very sharp looking and excellent mileage. my vehicle now has 170,000 kms and runs like new, no issues mechanically at all just oil changes and filters and brakes which I did myself - parts very easy to obtain online line rotors etc.

If you find a listing below $7,971.80, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — with a 4.7/5 user rating, the 2016 Hyundai Elantra is a strong fit if you want a compact car that emphasizes comfort and value. Its expert rating is 7.5/10, which lines up with the car’s broad appeal rather than standout excitement.
The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, reliability, excellent fuel economy, smooth ride, and attractive design. That matches the overview’s focus on a roomy, efficient, simple car that is easy to live with and aimed at buyers who want value without unnecessary complexity.
With 20.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to reliability, and the broader review language reinforces that this is a car people feel they can count on over time.
The expert evaluation describes the drivetrain as predictable and free of aggravation, which supports the impression of a dependable daily driver. It also notes favorable dependability ratings and low predicted ownership costs, plus warranty coverage that helps reduce early ownership risk.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the car’s basic durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by age or mileage.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?
At 46.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of repair quality, since accident history can affect both reliability and resale value.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE is the entry point, while the Value Edition adds 16-inch aluminum wheels and a more upscale feel; the Limited is the most upscale of the trims mentioned, and the Sport is the more powerful, tighter-suspension version.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a 145-hp 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. The SE gets a 6-speed manual, while the Value Edition and Limited use a 6-speed automatic with a manual shift gate and Active Eco setting.
- Safety package: A reversing camera is standard on all but the base SE. The car is described as lacking modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies.
- Infotainment: A touchscreen radio with Bluetooth is standard on most versions, while the Sport and Limited can add a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Pandora access, navigation, premium audio, and Blue Link services.
- Fuel efficiency: The official EPA rating is 28 mpg city/38 highway/32 combined, and the test loop returned 33.8 mpg.
Which 2016 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2016 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, Value Edition, Sport, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the least expensive path into the Elantra, but it is also the most stripped-down version mentioned here. It uses the manual transmission and lacks the standard reversing camera found on the higher trims, so it makes the most sense if your priority is keeping the purchase price as low as possible.
- Value Edition: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers. It adds 16-inch aluminum wheels, a more polished look, and the 6-speed automatic with Active Eco, while keeping the car’s core value proposition intact.
- Sport: Choose this if you want the more powerful feel and tighter suspension. The tradeoff is that the steering is described as artificial, so it is better for shoppers who care more about performance flavor than relaxed commuting.
- Limited: This is the most upscale trim mentioned, and it is the one to consider if you want the most features and the available 7-inch infotainment setup. It suits you best if comfort and equipment matter more than minimizing cost.
The safety package note is simple: the reversing camera is standard on all but the base SE.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 20.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,223 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.13% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 46.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,971.80, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $8,350 sits slightly below last year's $8,802.
That price movement suggests the Elantra has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. A softer market today may also make it easier for you to find a cleaner example without paying a premium.
If demand stays steady for a car with this kind of owner satisfaction, resale should remain reasonably supported. The key for you is to buy a well-kept example, because condition will matter more than the model’s already-moderate price trend.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra safe?
The Elantra earned an overall rating of five stars from NHTSA, and IIHS gave it Good ratings in all tests except the small overlap frontal impact evaluation, where it received an Acceptable rating.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The car includes a reversing camera, but it is standard only on trims above the base SE. It is also described as lacking modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies, so you should not expect the kind of active safety suite found in newer compact cars.
The main caveat is the small overlap frontal result, which is weaker than the rest of its crash-test performance. That makes condition, trim choice, and careful inspection especially important if safety is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 20.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 46.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.13% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It delivers roomy, efficient, simple value with a comfortable, easy-to-live-with character.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $7,912, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,350 average.
- It offers generous space and strong value with a polished everyday feel.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $9,627, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,350 average.
- It brings a full redesign with stronger technology, safety, and overall polish.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, value, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the sensible pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 can save you money, while the 2017 makes sense if you want the newer redesign and are willing to pay more for it.
