What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

At 45.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows uneven wear. Focus on condition first: bodywork, alignment, tire wear, and how the electronics and safety features operate in real-world use. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example is usually worth paying a little more for.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE trim includes power windows and locks, a 6-speaker stereo with AM/FM/XM radio and a CD player, and USB/auxiliary audio inputs. The Limited adds Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity with voice control, keyless entry, push-button start, and steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, so it’s the better-equipped choice if you want a more polished daily driver.
• Powertrain: The Elantra uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with drive modes for Normal, Sport, and Eco. Fuel economy is rated at 29 mpg city and 38 highway, while the Limited returns 28 mpg city and 37 highway.
• Safety package: Available safety tech includes electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, tire pressure monitoring, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection. Some of the more advanced features are not standard on every trim.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes USB/auxiliary audio inputs and SiriusXM satellite radio. Higher trims add navigation with turn-by-turn instructions in the gauge-cluster display, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available through the touchscreen.
• Fuel efficiency: The Elantra is rated at 29 mpg city, 38 highway, and 33 combined, while the Limited is rated at 28 mpg city and 37 highway. The SE with the manual drops to 26/36.

Which 2017 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 2 trim levels: SE, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Elantra experience with power windows and locks, a 6-speaker stereo, and USB/auxiliary inputs. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and can live without the nicer convenience features.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want the Elantra to feel more complete, since it adds Bluetooth with voice control, keyless entry, push-button start, and steering-wheel-mounted controls. It also pairs well with the available tech and safety packages if you want a more upscale small car.

The safety package is strongest on the Limited, where the available Ultimate Package adds headlights that bend with the road, smart cruise control, lane-departure warning, and collision avoidance.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $9,421 sits slightly below last year's $10,031.

That softer pricing suggests the Elantra has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 45.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.09% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 brings a full redesign with strong technology, efficiency, and safety.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $8,301, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,421 average.
• It offers roomy, efficient, simple, and safe transportation.

The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded Elantra with the redesign’s stronger tech and safety appeal, the 2017 is the smarter pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 can still make sense as a value-focused alternative.
